The men’s soccer team from Southwestern Oregon Community College opened the season with a scoreless draw against visiting Spokane on Friday.

“It was fantastic for the guys,” said Southwestern coach Ray Fabien, who has just three players back from last year’s squad.

“They played great.”

Fabien said goalie Drew Jones, Scott Johnson, Danny Valencia, Adnan Omer and Fernando Gonzalez all had strong matches.

“The entire team played fantastic,” he said. “Spokane is a good team. The kids are playing very well together.”

The Lakers are home again today, facing Columbia Basin at 2 p.m., after the Laker women meet Columbia Basin at noon.

Southwestern’s women fell 2-1 to Spokane on Friday.

Spokane’s Amanda Swenson scored the winning goal in the 69th minute.

Southwestern’s goal was scored by Sarah Droege in the 38th minute. That tied the game, answering an earlier goal by Spokane’s Samantha Neinstadt.
