Marshfield comes up just short at Marist

Marshfield missed extra points on its first three touchdowns, and they proved costly in a 27-25 loss to host Marist in Eugene.

The Pirates got a touchdown on the next to last play of the game when quarterback Kyle Tedder ran 15 yards for a score. Tedder made the extra point kick to pull the Pirates within two, but they were out of time to complete the comeback.

Marist had the lead the entire game. Tevin Cheever had a touchdown run to start the scoring and then connected with Jeff Bedbury for the first of two touchdown passes.

Marshfield’s Kyle Brown followed that score by returning the kickoff 95 yards, but the Pirates failed an attempted two-point conversion out of the swinging gate formation.

In the second quarter, Tedder connected with Jordan Shepherd on a 25-yard scoring pass to pull Marshfield within 14-12, and the Pirates failed on a pass attempt for the extra point.

Marist extended the lead to 21-12 on Bedbury’s second touchdown, but Brown scored for Marshfield early in the fourth. This time, the Pirates attempted a kick, but it sailed wide of the goalpost.

Marist’s backup quarterback, Sam Hardin, hit Gianni Carter with a touchdown pass to give the Spartans a little cushion, though the extra-point kick failed.

But Tedder’s touchdown came too late for the Pirates.
