Local golf: Matthews, Wilson win couples tourney

Casey Matthews and Marilyn Wilson won the top flight in the annual Labor Day Couples Tournament at Coos Country Club.
The pair won the three-day golf event with a score of 204. That was six strokes better than Don Smith and Kellie Holmstedt.
Kelly and Forbes Robinson had the best net score in the A-flight with a 170.
In the B-flight, Robert McCall and Judy Bradley had the best gross score with a 233, while Mike and Shari Maguire had the best net score, 182.5.
The C-flight winners were Steve and Carol Philippi for low gross (248) and Mike and Cindy Bodkin for low net (181).
The couples played in a scramble format on Saturday, best ball on Saturday and Chapman on Monday.
The tournament drew 48 teams this year.
Popeye & Olive Oyl
Lynn Mantooth and Sheryl Beck teamed to win the Popeye race in the 17th-annual Popeye and Olive Oyl tournament at Cedar Bend Golf Club over the holiday weekend.
Mantooth and Beck outlasted 14 other teams to win the title, beating Vlasta Hilmar and Judy Hulbert on the final hole.
The couples tournament included a random draw for partners.
After two days of qualifying, the top 15 teams were put into the Popeye race, with the next 15 in the Wimpy race.
Kelly Polk and Kay Bullian won the Wimpy race, with Tom Roseberry and Patty Morris taking second.
State Elks
Jeff Johnson beat Ronnie Davis to win the championship flight in the annual Oregon State Elks match-play tournament at Coquille Valley Elks Lodge over the holiday weekend.
Johnson beat Davis, the 2007 champion, 1-up in the championship match.
The other flight winners were Craig Davis, Kevin Odle, Craig Praus, Ron Cress, Bill Looney, Ed Yelton, Jay Westrum, Gary Britt and C.J. King.
The event drew 80 men, all Elks members.
A women’s scramble, held the final two days of the weekend, was won by Margaret Bishop, Marion Johnson and Norma Lupkes, who had a 73.
That score was two shots better than the teams of Sentia Johnson, Ashley Johnson and Margaret Hampton; and Jackie Liedholdt, Gail Burke and Gerry Leep. |
