Rocky volunteers

The South Coast Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation needs a volunteer work crew to do some work on U.S. Forest Service land just outside of Reedsport.

The project will be Saturday on a site that is located about 10 miles east of the top of the Gardiner Hill.

Volunteers need to bring their own weed eaters and cut an 5-acre field of tall grass and blackberries.

Everyone will meet in the parking lot next to the Dairy Queen in Reedsport at 8 a.m. Saturday and follow a Forest Service rig to the site.

Preserving the meat

OSU Master Food Preserves will present a beef and poultry canning class from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sutherlin Community Center, 150 S. Willamette. 

They will teach everything you want to know about preserving your own meats, including the proper methods of pressure canning. Bring dial gauge lids to the class for free accuracy testing. The cost is $15. For more information, call OSU Extension Service, (541) 672-4461.

Monday

After school to-dos

The Salvation Army begins an After School Program weekdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. starting Monday at the Worship Service Center, 1155 Flanagan Ave., Coos Bay.

Activities are available to grades one to eight. Children can participate in supervised activities including indoor recreation and crafts.

They also can get help with homework.  A nutritious snack will be served daily, and activities are free.

Funding is provided in Coos County by the F. Willis Smith Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.

Pre-registration is not requi-red, and parents can register their children on the first day.

Camp meeting

Camp Fire USA, Wilani Council, is seeking children ages 3-21 and families for their club program. Big auditions

Auditions for singers and dancers for Little Theatre on the Bay’s fifth-annual Little Ol’ Big Band Show will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at LTOB. This year’s production, “Any Swing Goes,” will celebrate the music of the kings of swing. The show will be under the stage direction of Byrell Justice, and music direction of Steve Simpkins. The show runs from Nov. 7 to 9.

Apples for teacher

There will be an “Apples + Chalk board = Teachers” event at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Frazier’s Banquet Room, 23 E. First St., Coquille.

This event is presented by Girls Night Out, and features Stephanie Plizzi, a food allergy teacher for OSU extension service. Pat Smith from Mackay, Idaho, also will be featured.

The cost is $7.50, and a dessert or mini chef salad will be provided. Reservations are requested, call Retta Ryan at 572-0552.

Seniors meet

Coquille Valley Senior’s Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Coquille Senior Center, 265 E. First St. Jordi Lindegren from the Coquille Library will present the program.

Wednesday

Ladybug fundraiser

There will be a Harvest Fundraiser for the Ladybug Landing Community Garden from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10, in downtown Coos Bay.

The cost is $5 for a fresh vegetable, stir fry lunch with salad, and $1 for a dessert of ice cream with fresh berries. The garden is located at the corner of Eighth Street and Anderson Avenue in downtown Coos Bay.

If you have any vegetables you would like to donate from your home garden for the “Best of the Garden” event, they can be delivered from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, at Black Market Gourmet, 495 Central Ave. Anything will be appreciated.
