A Coos Bay man, Matthew P. Kohanes, died Tuesday when part of a tree struck him as he was falling timber in Douglas County.

At about noon, members of the  Douglas County Fire District 2, Milo Volunteer Fire Department and Douglas County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a logging accident on Johnnie Springs Road off South Umpqua Falls Road, a Sheriff’s Office press release said.

Kohanes, 45, was cutting timber in a road-building project on Roseburg Forest Products’ land, when the top of a tree near the one he was falling slammed into him, police said. Emergency workers pronounced Kohanes dead at the scene. At press time, police did not know the name of the company employing Kohanes. Officials said his family has been notified.
