Attacks don’t show openness to views

I recently submitted a letter: “Like Frisco? Then Vote Democratic” (The World, Aug. 6), regarding how America would look with the very liberal Obama as president and liberal Democrats running both houses of Congress.

I was immediately attacked in personal letters, online opinions and a letter submitted by Sharon Ramirez (The World, Aug. 12). Ramirez’ letter stated that I did not back up any of my statements with references. The reason I didn’t was the limited space available. Most of the evidence is available online or in recent news items.

Below are the references to the items mentioned:

San Francisco second highest tax burden in USA: Tax Foundation Web site.

San Francisco firearm ownership policy: San Francisco CBS5 News May 16, 2007. All guns must be locked up and inaccessible. That renders the gun useless. (Let’s see how fast you can open your gun save while someone is kicking your door in.)

San Francisco is a “sanctuary city” where illegal aliens who commit crimes are, in many cases, not prosecuted because to do so may expose them to deportation. In a recent event, a known criminal alien being protected by the city went on to murder three members of the Bologna family. San Francisco Chronicle, June 29, 2008.

Obama has shown disdain of the military: In another broadly publicized  story Obama ignored injured troops in Germany when he discovered he couldn’t use the visit for a photo op.

Regarding the comment that I likely have never even been to San Francisco: I lived in California for 47 years and have visited San Francisco countless times. I saw it change from a beautiful city that honored and revered the U.S. military to a city where homeless people defecate on the sidewalk. The military is openly rejected by the San Francisco City Council as a matter of public record.

I’m not sure how to respond to the allegation that I have “been listening to hate radio,” because I’m not sure what “hate radio” is. I suspect it is free speech that Ms. Ramirez may not agree with. I seldom listen to the radio but rather spend most of my time working for a living.

I share Ms. Ramirez’s hope that our country can “come together.” However, I am not interested in “coming together” if this means forsaking my moral values or the Bill of Rights.

There is this:

"As if it couldn't support itself, Alaska also ranks No. 1, year after year, in money it sucks in from Washington. In 2005 (the most recent figures), according to the Tax Foundation, Alaska ranked 18th in federal taxes paid per resident ($5,434) but first in federal spending received per resident ($13,950)."

So, if you want another Alaska, vote Republican?

Next.

"Liberals don't like or want facts. They overlook the truth, and make up their own facts if needed."

They do? And not one right-leaning soul has EVER done this in the history of the entire Republican party? Ever?

That's an awfully bold statement to be making with no proof or qualifications. I want to see some references here. Who said this? Was it a study? Seriously.

You said I was wrong about your letters policy. Well please tell me what has changed. You once told me it was only 1 (one) a month, and it was up to you to decide which ones you printed. I have written many that were never printed, and especially if they included any negative true facts on any businesses around here, that might advertise in your paper. Why is that. Do you protect all your advertisers from negative publicity in your paper? I have talked to other people who can't get there letters printed in the paper also, and some have told me that if they call and question you as to why they weren't published, THEN YOU PUBLISH THEM.... and the other thing is when people write letters pertaining to a recent article in the paper, you wait so long to publish the letter, that the article being commented on is out of everyones mind by then and forgotten altogether. SO PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I WROTE, THAT IS WRONG ! ! !

Sounds more like OPINION than FACT, sir, of the sort one reads in the grocery store checkout line.

Right on Mr. Cook, good for you.

Liberals don't like or want facts. They overlook the truth, and make up their own facts if needed.

And as for letters to the editor, you can write only one a month and then it might not get published. Up to the editor if he wants it or not, and he don't want too many. (Note from editor: "NB" is mistaken about our letters policy. We accept and publish any locally written letter that meets our standards regarding length, decency and defamation. All viewpoints are welcome. We do ask people to limit the frequency of their letters, in order to keep the Public Forum fresh and varied. Our hope is that, over time, more people will write letters, so that we can have more of them to publish.)

Point of fact: San Francisco is a “sanctuary city” for illegal aliens. Illegal aliens commit crimes, the very fact they're illegal makes them criminals.
Point of fact: US tax dollars goto San Francisco. Those tax dollars are supporting illegal aliens.

To argue or deny these facts only makes one look like a fool.
Ms. Ramirez, you're free to move back to Kaulifornia anytime it's convenient

Tony:
I have read your lengthy comments on alot of Letters to the Editor and I have a few questions for you.

1: Do you have a life? Who has time to write such long critques of so many articles?
2: What are your qualifications to make the statements of FACT that you continually make?
3: If indeed you are so knowledgeable and educated, why don't you write some letters and let others take pot shots at you?

I have no idea whether you really "know your stuff" but the length and tone of your responses defeats your purpose in several cases.

Just my opinion

Your statemnt "Being corrected is not being attacked. If you do not have your facts straight, some one pointing that out to you is not an attack"

Just look at the other comments....these are direct attacks to Mr. Cook's letter.
As is yours, you can claim your FACTS are true, but it is very doubtful.

Seems you want to compete in the "arena of idea's" so here is one:
I researched your claim of SanFran being number two in taxes-you are right, the Federal tax burden of SanFran is 36k per person, according to your stated source.
How clever of you not to mention why:

Federal dollars are flowing to SanFran for....wait for it....the Military!
Who knew?
The Tax Foundation did.
And, since its your source, works for me.
As to the gun thing, I dont get it, the law says you cannot buy one in the City, thats all. It says nothing about taking them away nor locking them up.

You quoted facts out of context in an effort to prove your point.

In the "arena of idea's", you just lost.

Your accusation about Obama and the troops in Afghanistan, sorry friend, just because it was "broadly publicized", does not make it true.

If that was the only standard for truth, "Mission Accomplished" would have been just that.

Really? Better go read up on what really happened and know the reason why. Cook comes across as a KOOK of the rightwingnut variety.

By your comments, I doubt that.

Nice article Mr. Cook! For some reason, I doubt that Ms. Ramirez will respond much to this letter as you have backed up your points with great references. Again, nice work...
