Kyle Davis came off the bench to throw five touchdown passes as Myrtle Point beat visiting Illinois Valley 40-24 in the season opener for the Bobcats on Friday in the head coaching debut of John Marquez.

Starting quarterback Ryan Hamilton had a touchdown pass to Willy Looney in the first quarter after Illinois Valley scored the opening touchdown.

But Hamilton rolled his ankle early in the second quarter — an injury that Marquez said does not appear to be serious — and Davis threw a touchdown pass to James Brown and two more to Looney to put the Bobcats in front 26-6 in the third quarter.

Illinois Valley stormed back to within two points with three straight touchdowns, but Myrtle Point settled down in the fourth quarter and Davis had a 60-yard scoring strike to Brown and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Scott Clark to finish the scoring.

Hamilton and Davis combined for 349 yards passing — but also had four interceptions — and Myrtle Point added another 106 rushing yards.

The Bobcats also lost two fumbles, and the turnovers helped the Cougars get back into the game.

“Overall, what I’m really happy about, is all we talked about all week long is when you get faced with adversity,” Marquez said. “When it was 26-24, our kids stepped up and we took over the fourth quarter.”

Marquez praised the pass-blocking work of his offensive line, but said the game was only the beginning.

“It’s going to get harder before it’s easier,” he said. “We’re still a long way away.”

Roger Hults had three touchdown passes for Illinois Valley and the Cougars also scored on a blocked punt.

Red Devils win

Six different players scored touchdowns as Coquille rolled to a 49-14 win over visiting Waldport on Friday.

Heston Altenbach had a 31-yard scoring run in the first quarter and later threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Rex Dixon.

Dixon also had a scoring run, as did Joe Harris. Richard Veneable and Derek Yarnell also scored for the Red Devils and Harris converted five extra-point kicks.

The Red Devils had 420 total yards, including 314 rushing yards.

Coquille also limited Waldport to 198 yards.

Coquille coach John Breuer was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We came out sluggish,” he said. “Then we settled down and started playing football. Some really neat things happened.”

Waldport’s Perry Moore had two long touchdown runs — 52 and 38 yards — to account for nearly half the total yards for the Irish.

Aside from that, Coquille’s defense was solid.

“It was a great start,” Breuer said. “A lot of young kids played, too.”

Braves fall

Central Linn scored the winning touchdown with 21 seconds to go in the game, edging host Reedsport 8-6 Friday night in an OSAA endowment game.

Kaleb Scott took a swing pass from Dalton Murry 11 yards for the winning score.

The Braves had led since Cory Christoffersen’s 5-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Central Linn got a safety when Will Marchbanks tackled a Reedsport ball carrier in the end zone later in the second quarter and the game remained 6-2 until the final seconds.

Murry completed 14 of 34 passes for 145 yards for the Cobras, but also threw three interceptions — two by Dillon Chudy and one by Christoffersen.

Reedsport was held to 52 yards rushing, with the offense going downhill after quarterback Adam Chase went down with a shoulder injury early in the game.

The extent of Chase’s injury wasn’t known Friday night.
