COQUILLE — The candidate pool for mayor doubled to two when former police chief Michael Reaves joined the race.

Incumbent Steve Britton, seeking his fourth term, isn’t bothered or surprised to have company.

“I welcome a challenger,” he said.

Reaves welcomes a chance to continue serving the community. He moved to town 12 years ago to become police chief. Now retired by a shoulder injury, he has decided to stay.

“It’s a good place to live,” Reaves said, but he has aspirations to make it better.

“I think we need to develop our city as a place people want to come visit and live permanently,” Reaves said.

But first, both candidates say the community needs to mend wounds after a bruising year, especially for the city’s police department.

The department was under a microscope earlier in the year after an arrest by two officers left a man paralyzed. The officers were not brought up on charges, but concern and complaints about the department persisted.

Both Britton and Reaves say the situation could have been handled better, but they differ on how. Reaves contends much of the problem could have been avoided if city leadership had asked for official complaints, rather than let the department be judged on rumor and innuendo.

“I think the mayor should have pushed for specifics,” Reaves said.

Britton said the city may have found a solution in not only hiring a new police chief, but also in the manner in which it did so.

He said the city received requests that the hiring process be public. City officials changed the process to satisfy those requests. As a result, Britton said, the city made a strong choice in Police Chief Mark Dannels.

“He’s a no-nonsense guy,” Britton said. “He’s going to be the kind of chief we have needed for years.”

Hiring a new police chief is just a start. According to both Reaves and Britton, the city still has some work to do.

“We need to promote the city of Coquille,” Reaves said.

Putting Coquille in a positive spotlight is Reaves’ main reason for running. His time as police chief and his familiarity with the city council make him a good choice, he said.

“I’ve been to almost every city council meeting,” he said. “I know all the issues the city is facing.”

One of those issues is the former Georgia-Pacific mill site — now an empty lot. Both candidates are hopeful they will find someone who wants to develop the site soon.

In addition to making the G-P site a useful addition to the city, Britton wants to see the completion of upgrades to the water and wastewater plants.

“I get things done,” Britton said. “I’ve never walked away from anything.”

Britton asserts he has made city government more user-friendly by allowing citizens plenty of time to address the council.

“We work for the public,” he said. “I’m going to take their input.”

He says his experience and approachability make him a good fit for Coquille.

“Now I know the process,” Britton said. “I tried to better myself as a mayor.”

Quite frankly Tom your comment about me putting on my big girl panties was a bit out there don't you think? What kind of thing is that to say to the mother of a murdered teen? What exactly do my "panties" have to do with Reaves being Mayor? Also I would like you to tell me exactly what his qualifications are as far as being Mayor? Oh, you surely are talking about his lovely "people skills" right? Um. Hum. Now get to the subject and never mind about my "panties" ok. Good grief.

Cory wrote on Sep 28, 2008 5:48 PM:

Well Tom - I would "get over myself" if Mr. Reaves wouldn't have screwed up Leah's case to begin with but.......

And to be quite honest - you don't sound "sorry for my loss" at all.

I do blame the killer(s)....AND Reaves. Don't like that? Too bad. I still don't think he would be good for the Mayor position in Coquille AT ALL. Period.

so the world newspaper shouldn't print any opinions on their comments page, i think they should actually quit censoring them we are all entitled to our opinions as we have freedom of speech. glad to know you think we should have that taken away when we don't agree with you..and you want us to vote for reaves haha. also i don't think cory said anything about it lea's murder being reaves or the polices fault of course it is the killers fault however due to shoddy police work the killer was never found and that is the police/reaves fault.

Tom wrote on Sep 11, 2008 4:29 PM:

To Cory...maybe you can't find an "incedent" in his last job was because there wasn't one. Put on your big girl panties and get over your self. We are all sorry for your loss...truly. But it wasn't Chief Reaves fault...not the PD's fault. Tragic of course. But put your blame where it belongs....on the killer.

To What a Shame:
I figured that out! The "other Tom" isn't too hard to figure out who he is! What he thinks is the problem!

To Kay:
I don't guess we will ever get the answer to to the "incident" Reaves was involved in before he came to Coquille! I have tried to find that out for years!

To Change:

Very well said!

COQUILLE NEEDS TO MOVE FORWARD.WE ALREADY HAVE CHANGE IN THE NEW CHIEF LETS US CONTINUE MAKING CHANGES.

TO CORY: Just so that you know. THIS TOM is not me. I was using TOM and then another TOM came on line making some remarks that in now way did I agree with, so I did not want anyone to confuse Him with ME so I changed to a screen name rather than using my real name. Just letting you know. And to the "World", I do hope that you will allow this to be printed. Thank You

Kay wrote on Sep 8, 2008 12:24 PM:

Speaking of gossip, what was that "incident" Reaves was involved in before coming to Coquille? I forget now, maybe someone remembers?

Tom - seems YOU should know about professionalism in journalism, right? Can you say Crony?

Cory wrote on Sep 7, 2008 8:12 PM:

To Tom:

Really? Are you serious??? No. You are the joke. How well do YOU know Mr. Reaves? Do you think he did well as a Chief? Really? I guess the comments just aren't going "your" way huh? Too bad. This is how people feel. We have a right to voice our opinion just like you.

Tom wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:47 PM:

You people are a joke. How many of you actually know Mike Reaves or have any real information to base your opinions on? Sounds like a bunch of whining and listening to gossip and inuendo to me.

At least Reaves has never been accused of a crime or been denied admission to the Police Academy. Can your current mayor say that? Ask him.

I imagine that most of these comments are coming from people he (Reaves) has had to deal with on a "professional" basis.

World Newspaper....if you do not print my comments you are certainly biased. Look at the way the comments you have allowed are going.

In my opinion... allowing any of these comments is a crime against professionalism in the news media.

Take the time to find out what the mayor really has control over. Not much.

Living in Coquille wrote on Sep 6, 2008 4:58 PM:

What has the current mayor done for this town? Squat from where I'm sitting. No new Safeway store, the city wanted Safeway to pay for the new sewer system, Safeway told them to pound sand! So, no new store, no new Bi-mart, no nothing! We still don't have an updated sewer system, so no new residential houses going in, still have crappy roads and empty commercial buildings. OH, but we have really cool ( not ) flashy stop signs and lots of really exspensive flower baskets. This town is falling apart fast and who every we get for a mayor had better breath some life into this town before it gets worse.

Reaves was a horrible police chief and would be an even worse mayor. Say no to Reaves.

TO CORY: Thank you for the nice comment. I DO know you and I know what you have been through with this Chief. Disreguard all the comments that HE said and YOU keep up the good work for the citizens of Coquille and for Lea. I don't really think you realize how many people are standing with you. The Chief was wrong treating you like he did. This is just a example of how he really is, and now he wants to be the Mayor. What a total joke. If the citizens of Coquille cannot see through his web of lies and mistruths, then I really do pitty the citizens of Coquille. What a total waste......What A Shame...Vote for BRITTON

What a Shame wrote on Sep 5, 2008 8:16 AM:

City councilman Parker should have been kicked off the the council long ago, ask him why he got his license for real estate suspended for a while. He, along with his twin Reeves, should be run out of town. Parker should back Reves for Mayor, they are just alike. I am so greatful that Reeves is gone as police chief. People should ask him what the real reason was that he quit. Shoulder injury, yeah right. Several of the city council and especially Steve Britton was in the process of releaving him of his duty. The city manager is the only one that can fire or hire anyone, the council has no power on that subject. Also our deadbeat city manager is in the process of being elimited also. VOTE BRITTON FOR MAYOR Good deal........and....What a Shame

Nick wrote on Sep 4, 2008 5:59 PM:

Chief Reeves needs to leave Coquille alone, he has done enough damage to it. What a unfriendly person. Him and his sidekick O'Conner think like twins. All the years i've lived here I can't think of a time when Coquille was this bad off. No 4 Reeves Yes for a change.

Mike wrote on Sep 4, 2008 3:42 PM:

You people have lost your minds.

Coquille is a cesspool of ignorance. I am glad I no longer have a business in that rotten little apple.

Reaves is the right choice for Mayor. At least he will end the lies and corruption of the council and end the failed regime of Britton.

Oh whats the use, Coquille is this centuries lost cause and should be bulldozed into the river.

Buddy boy wrote on Sep 4, 2008 2:09 PM:

city council Parker is behind pushing ex Chief Reeves to run for Mayor, sounds like there is some back biting going on between the council members and our only professional Mayor. Vote to keep Mayor Britton in office. Throw the other bums out.

How can the City Manager O'Connor live in the Bay Area and still be Manager here in Coquille aren't you suppose to live in the city limits, hey City Council wake up and fire the man.
It is up to the voting public to wake up and get rid of all the council when they come up for re election, All we get here in coquille is culls from other places that is hired here.
Sure hope and Pray that the new Chief does not listen to ex Police Chief Reeves and some of his present Officers, listen, learn and be watchful. The doggie park is a joke. The G.P. lot will never be develop as long as we have the present adminstration.
I am with you Mayor Britton go get um. The council should work together for the city.

Well it's me - Leah's mother! You got that right. Waste of tax payer money. I have never seen such unprofessionalism in my life. And now he wants to be our Mayor?? What a joke. He has absolutely no people skills what so ever. NO TO REAVES FOR MAYOR!

What a Shame wrote on Sep 4, 2008 8:11 AM:

Any public official who, at a open meeting, tells any citizen that he refuses to talk to them about a very cerious subject, should be fired imediately. Just ask the Mother of Lea what the so called "Cheif of Police" told her about the investigation concerning Lea's murder. What a total waste of tax payer money. I hope the Mike can sleep at night. If I would have done what he has done to the citizens of Coquille and expecially to the family of Lea, well, nightey night Mike. You are out of here and will NEVER be our Mayor. Citizens have had more than enough of you.

Steve is a good man, and has done a very good job, WITH WHAT HE HAS TO WORK WITH. Very "old school" council. And a city manager that should have been gone years ago. Not to mention a renagade police force. There is no question.....Steve has my vote.

coquille resident wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:45 PM:

thankfully the poor actions of former chief reaves are fresh in everyone's mind; good luck winning this race mikey boy.

As for coquille, i don't know steve, but this town seems to be in dire need of some new blood. i see comments about stuff getting done around here. i've not lived here that long. what's getting done? when are our gas tax dollars going to go to fix roads? the streets in this town remind me of coos bay/north bend's after they installed the natural gas stuff.

but anywho, back to my main issue: vote no to reaves.

I hope the new City Police Chief will clean out the city police force we have one real bad apple in there. As for as the city council the 3 that are in there now I hope gets throw out on their ear. We need new young blood that has some brains. Yes, Coquille is CLICK CITY FOR DARN SURE. You scratch my A-- and I scratch yours. One more thing why don't the city enforce city codes and clean up the residential areas. Doggie park is going to be trouble with people not picking up their doo doo and dogs getting in fights a smelley place in residents area. AMEN

Chief Reeves is a very poor choice for Coquille. He doesn't have a lot of support except the crowd at city hall. We need a new thinker in there because Coquille has never looked so bad. ( Empty stores, dirty communty building, ect)He was not a people Chief and would not be a good mayor .

both are bad choices for the folks of Coquille. Steve is a good man but failed to stop the terrible burden of folks with water bills. We need someone who is not afraid to take on the council for the people. Mike Reeves is not that person. he has failed the people of Coquille many times and refused to take is police force in hand.

what a shame wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:09 AM:

We the people in Coquille should be greatful to Steve. Since he has been our Mayor things have gotton done and whats more important the City government has been taken care of. Good work Steve. Mike Reeves was one of the worst chief's this city has ever had. I hope the next one is better, but the old saying," when you are on the bottom, you can only go up." So by saying that, things can only get better now that Reeves is out of there. And can you see what would happen if we ever had anything like "Mayor Reeves". Man that would be a joke wouldn't it. Wake up citizens of Coquille, Steve is good for Coquille and will continue to be good for Coquille.

I agree that Coquille needs a third choice! Britton has been in too long with nothing to show for it and Reeves is the by far the worst choice possible! Someone needs to get Coquille going again and it won't get done by either choice for mayor.

anom wrote on Sep 1, 2008 8:36 AM:

I don't think Reeves should be elected to council because he has always been pro police and did not seem to care about the citizens of Coquille. As for the way the broken neck with the 2 officers it was plain from the start that he had already made his mind up for the 2 cops

Cory wrote on Aug 31, 2008 9:45 AM:

You were close Reeves, only its you I have no respect for.

All former city employees should not run for any office within the town because they know how the system works, and don't want to change things.
