COOS BAY — People at the Bay Area Teen Idol semifinals thought they knew what would happen.

Based on the previous seven weeks’ results, the contestants, the judges and the audience alike could have predicted the three finalists: Alyssa Birrer, Star Moralez and Destyni Fuller consistently have been the top scorers. Mariah Rogers and Caitlin Mansfield would be eliminated.

But when the results were announced Thursday night at the Egyptian Theatre, everyone was surprised.

“Those advancing to the finals,” emcee Mike Chavez began, “are Mariah Rogers ….”

Gasps erupted throughout the theater, and looks of panic spread across the contestants' faces.

“… Destyni Fuller ….”

More gasps. Could one of the two front-runners possibly have been eliminated?

“… Star Moralez … and Alyssa Birrer.”

Organizers had surprised everyone by advancing four contestants to the finals, set for Sept. 20 at the Bay Area Fun Festival.

“You never know what’s going to happen,” contest coordinator Stephanie Kilmer explained.

At the outset of the contest, organizers wouldn’t make public the number of eliminations they planned each week, but they shared one detail freely: There would be three contestants in the final.

Those most surprised by the change of plans were probably the contestants themselves.

“I was really surprised when they called Mariah,” Fuller said. “I thought, ‘Oh no, I’m out!’ But I’m so glad to be going to the finals.”

While the other contestants got a scare, Rogers had a different worry.

“I was really shocked,” she said. “I was freaking out because I thought Alyssa wasn’t going to make it.”

Rogers, 14, said she had mixed feelings about competing in the final, when the finalists will perform three songs each.

“I was planning on not doing any more songs, and now I have to learn three more,” she said. “I’m excited — thrilled and not, at the same time.”

The order of the top scorers wasn’t announced during the show, but Kilmer said Chavez read the top four names in reverse order.

The semifinalists performed songs of their choice in the first round and pop songs in the second, in front of an unusually small crowd of about 200.

Birrer, who also won the people’s choice award for Saturday, sang “Show Off” from “The Drowsy Chaperone,” a tongue-in-cheek show tune about not wanting to perform anymore, and Kelly Clarkson’s “The Trouble With Love.” Introducing her second song, Birrer said she  performed it in the 2006 competition. Judge Kim Handsaker had told her it was too big for her voice at 13, so she wanted to try it again.

“I have a hard time believing I ever said there was a song too big for your voice,” Handsaker told Birrer during the show. “I don’t think there’s such a thing.”

Moralez sang Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” and “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys, two songs that showcased her soulful voice.

Wearing an American flag-sequined dress, Fuller sang “Letters From War” by Mark Schultz and Amanda Marshall’s “Let It Rain.” Judges Kevin Freeman and Barbara Bates complimented her on singing from her heart.

Rogers sang The Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “How to Save a Life” by The Fray. She said she surprised herself during the second song when her mind drifted off and she realized she didn’t feel nervous anymore.

Mansfield sang “In My Own Little Corner” from “Cinderella” and Mandy Moore’s “Only Hope.” She all but guaranteed her elimination in the first round when she forgot the words to her song in four places, but she maintained her composure nonetheless. Remembering lyrics has not been a problem for her in the past, and she came back in the second half with a performance that garnered much applause.

One of the contest’s most heartwarming moments preceded the surprise announcement. As all of the contest participants returned to the stage for the last group performance, Birrer invited the children in the audience to come onstage and sing along to “We Are the World.” About 20 boys and girls joined a performance that moistened some eyes in the audience.

“It was a shining moment for the program and the contestants, who are looked up to as role models by younger children,” Kilmer said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

I have personally performed with two of the finalists, and I know neither girl wants to look out as she is singing and know that parents and bystanders alike are busy worrying about what the people next to them are saying and thinking and what's going to happen over and after the sound of the applause.

Someone will win, but we all should be adult enough to know that no one in this competition is a loser.

Proud Mom wrote on Sep 5, 2008 8:58 AM:

Here is EXACTLY what I said to officials.------------
I would like to make the point that while the objective of the program is to impress kids with the idea that drugs and alcohol are not the way to succeed in life, it is equally essential to demonstrate that fair play and decency are, or should be, the basis for this competition. Allowing the parents and friends of NAME to influence either the ability of another contestant to perform or the judges to impartially evaluate contestants is a perversion and corruption of the stated and understood aims of the Teen Idol program. It should be emphatically prohibited and violators should be barred from attendance at all future performances. When hecklers disrupt a speaker at a public event, regardless of their point, they are unceremoniously evicted. When the equivalent occurs in a Teen Idol competition, it is my opinion that the sponsors or organizers should take even stronger action to preserve a claim of fairness in the competition. The lack of any corrective action to restore and guarantee the integrity of the continuing program is a disgrace and intolerable. I sincerely wish I had withdrawn my daughter weeks ago.

Proud Mom wrote on Sep 5, 2008 8:16 AM:

Tom-

I have NEVER mentioned Star's name (or anyone else, for that matter) in a negative manner here...that was you.
I applaud every kid, every week. So do my family and friends. My daughter, on the other hand, is insulted and even booed. THAT is manipulative and mean. The family behind this is still there every week. THAT is deceitful.
You obviously do NOT know me in the least. If you see me speaking with anybody, it is because we might actually know them outside the small world of Teen Idol. If you know me, as you claim, you should come and say hello. Anyone is welcome to hear anything I say or have said at a Teen Idol venue.

Tom wrote on Sep 4, 2008 4:11 PM:

Too bad people don't know you like I know you "PROUD MOM".

You are quite the different person than you claim to be in here.

You are just as manipulative and deceitful as you claim Star's family is. Shameful.

Every week during the competition you were seen talking to Chip and Judges, what exactly were you doing? What were you saying? That looks like a manipulation to me.

Why don't you and your talented daughter just go away from all of this and pursue Broadway? Oh wait, the same kind of thing happening here could happen there. Fast Food it is then.

Proud Mom wrote on Sep 4, 2008 9:26 AM:

I would like to thank everyone standing up for Alyssa here and at Teen Idol performances.
An interesting note I would like to add about Alyssa's "Show Off" routine... She and her sister wore EXACTLY THE SAME outfit and did much the same choreography last year, playing chorus girls in Clint Guevara's number from "The Producers". in the semi-finals. Alyssa helped Clint get a better score and place higher than her while she was competing against him. He would have done the same for Alyssa, I am sure. Is that not what it is all about?

Very Saddened wrote on Sep 3, 2008 10:37 PM:

Reading through the comments I am saddened by such negative thoughts towards a young woman who is following a dream. It is not fair for anyone to shatter the dreams of any young person based on one performance. Please remember what it was like when you were that age and everything people said about you was taken to heart. Do you still carry any memory of someone tearing you down? Yes, they are teenagers, but think about this: 5 years ago a 15 year old was ten and probably in the 4th or 5th grade. 8 years ago they were only 8 and in the 3rd....where and what were you doing then? You were probably a grown adult living your life while that young child was dreaming about following the footsteps of the then new show American Idol.
There are alot of things in life that we may not agree with but please don't ruin how our young women...and men....look at life. They have enough to worry about with their peers than to worry about what strange adults think of them.
GO GIRLS! And Good luck, I'll be there with my kids to cheer you on!

another parent wrote on Sep 3, 2008 11:09 AM:

To Parent: I agree with you 100%! I said this on these posts before about my grandaughter. Her mother and I were considering letting her do this next year, hoping it would be a positive experience for her and she really wanted to do it. But now, after all of this negativity on here there is NO WAY we would even consider to subject her to the way these young ladies are getting treated! Good luck girls and I applaud you for going on through all this adversity!

Concerned Citizen wrote on Sep 3, 2008 8:15 AM:

Cathy,
"That type of performance" saddens you?? What's the high point of your day?? Wheel Of Fortune and Jeopardy?? Give me a break...and I'm not defensive. It just tends to upset me when we claim to be so intelligent, so evolved and so cultured and then I hear stupid comments like your's falling out of peoples' mouths...
To the rest...AMEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!! It's nice to see that there are people who know what talent is, who appreciate a fine performance and are not afraid to stand up and help defend a 15 year old.
Also...KUDOS TO CHIP DOMBROWSKI for the great job he has, is and will continue to do!!!

Parent wrote on Sep 2, 2008 4:13 PM:

And we wonder why kids today say mean things about kids and have no respect for other people. All you have to do is listen to the parents and/or adults here to know the answer. The comments on this subject are unbelievable....its teen idol people.....not Amercian idol. There's no million dollar recording contract, no movie star, instant fame worth thousands. Its COOS COUNTY folks, not Hollywood. This is suppose to be fun for the kids not give the adults a stage to be mean, hateful and awful to other kids....the key word here is KIDS. If I had a daughter that wanted to do this, I am pretty sure I would say no...kids today don't need any more negative feed back and self esteem bashing than they already get from other mean kids at school whose fruit obviously doesn't fall far from the family tree. Shameful!!

Betty wrote on Sep 2, 2008 3:00 PM:

Concerned Fan - How small minded is it to think that criticism of a performance implies a relationship to another contestant! I don't require that to know that I find something inappropriate.

Youth supporter wrote on Aug 31, 2008 11:43 PM:

I find it disgusting that the Bay Area, which is as focused on youth as we are, cannot simply let these young women have their talent competition and applaud their efforts. Why must we rip down these teens who are working so hard to provide entertainment and live up to their own expectations? They are asking nothing of our community except for our support . They are providing good role models and good behavior for those looking up to them. Let them sing. Don't get involved with your own agenda, don't criticize each other for no good reason on an anonymous board, and don't spread unsubstantiated rumors about these talented young girls! The World has been good to this competition, and everyone might have their favorites, but just because you think you know Chip is a fan of someone specific doesn't mean he or the newspaper is in the wrong for the unbiased, supportive and well-rounded reporting it has offered all year. Give the Idols a break -- and say thanks to Chip the next time you see him. It takes a lot of work to cover a competition this long and so well, much less to compete in one.

Another Proud Mom wrote on Aug 30, 2008 5:28 PM:

Wish my daughter was standing up there....but there is always next year ;)

I thought that Alyssa's Broadway number was great, and ripping her skirt off was a great "Broadway" move - they are judged by their "Performance" also. She really does belong on stage. She was wearing WAY more than any of majority of the athletes at the Olympics! I just watched "Ella Enchanted" last night on Disney - and she rips her skirt off at the end to reveal a shorter one....

I think that there have been other more provacative outfits worn, and even some of the songs have been more out there than should have been allowed - especially when combined with short and lowcut dresses.

To the remaining girls:
Alyssa - you have great talent and belong on stage!
Star - you have an amazing voice! Sometimes I don't care for your songs, BUT you're edgy and I do like to listen to you.
Destyni - You have a wonderful voice, and grace, and stage presence.
Mariah - You have a great voice and look like you belong up there!

Good luck to all!

eye in the lens wrote on Aug 30, 2008 10:52 AM:

In watching Ms. Birrer's performance one must listen to the words! She was simply saying she I’M not going to take the verbal jabs and abuse anymore and she was removing the jabs and holding her chin up high with self respect, throwing them off as if to properly not give them any credibility. May I remind you there were THREE Judges and a couple hundred people who overwhelmingly cheered after her performance and gave her positive remarks and the highest score of the evening. Having said that the majority felt there was nothing inappropriate with her performance period!

Please, let’s be adults. Remember that Teen Idol is a wonderful platform for youth to make friends, learn about the arts, build character, gain self confidence, give them a drug/alcohol free activity for summer and to HAVE FUN.

Next time you ridicule Teen Idol I would hope you step up and volunteer, walk in their shoes so you know what your talking about and parents wanting your child to be a part of Teen Idol program, it is a wonderful program and these kids have a blast despite all the media drama

eye in the lens wrote on Aug 30, 2008 10:52 AM:

In regards to "stripping" type comments I find it unfair that people made these comments about one contestant and not another. This leaves me to believe that your comments are bias as there has been another contestant who performs like this almost in every performance and I have not seen any of you complaining about this behavior before.

ie: throwing off a boa, taking gloves off one at a time and throwing them, wearing clothes that were too small revealing most of their undergarments or grabbing between your legs as you sing suggestively while acting like a 30 year old instead of a "Teen Idol".

If judges have allowed this behavior in the past without negative comment or scores it leaves other contestants to believe this is okay or desired and sometimes there is a fine line which is difficult for judges to walk over once it has been allowed by other contestants. Judges and volunteers do not know what or how the contestant is going to perform until it unfolds in front of them the night of an elimination. CONTINUED

eye in the lens wrote on Aug 30, 2008 10:51 AM:

Third, for the parents of the contestants: Hats off to you for supporting your child through Teen Idol, this is not an easy task and consumes most of your lives during the summer...and I know this first hand. It is obvious that some of the commenters have no idea how much work and support goes into the Teen Idol program. While they sit and enjoy the show and then judge it as if they are experts they do not truly know all the hard work that goes on the week previous by not only the contestants but their parents and all the volunteers.

Last but not least, if you are unhappy with a performance or how a contestant places for the night I suggest you do one of two things 1) Volunteer to be a judge but be prepared to show references with qualifications and to dedicate YOUR ENTIRE SUMMER! or 2) Write down your comments and give them to a Teen Idol volunteer so they may use this critique for next years program. First let me say I am proud of each and every contestant who entered this competition and had to walk away after being eliminated with dignity. YOU ROCKED! You should be proud of yourselves and you deserve Mega Kudos because it is a great triumph to have the courage to get on stage and perform weekly in front of strangers while dedicating your summer to this program and then return after being eliminated to join and support your fellow competitors as they continue to compete. You are our heroes and role models!

Second, the finalists also deserve praise for rising up and above the negative comments in print and posted on the internet as you show determination, poise and a level of maturity that some of the commenters have not. Keep your hearts pure and your goal to cherish every moment in the finals Sept 20th whether you win or not because you are making memories and building character that defines who you are! CONTINUED

I see that Concerned Citizen is standing up for a kid being attacked...something that happens EVERY SINGLE TIME Alyssa Birrer finishes ahead of Star Moralez. I do not see a bevy of negative comments as long at Ms. Moralez is in first place.
Why is nobody here concerned with the horrible things shouted at Alyssa and others by Star's family right in the theater?
Is it because you are the very same people?
I heard many dedications on Thursday...what I heard is that Alyssa could not sing her song when she tried 2 years ago, now she can. She was told something by the judge and she listened.
I have seen Concerned Citizen praise Star and defend Destyni here as well. However, nobody seems to get slammed the way Alyssa does....makes me want to defend her as well!

Cathy wrote on Aug 30, 2008 1:20 AM:

Concerned Citizen, I'm sorry you seem to be so defensive. It saddens me to think that any mother would encourage that type of performance by a young girl.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 30, 2008 1:00 AM:

Christopher,
Why can't I be objective?!? Now that's funny! I have sung the praises of all the contestants who deserve them. Week after week! I'm probably the most HONEST person on this website. However, when I hear(or read) people bashing a teenage girl, FOR NO GOOD REASON, it tends to set me off.
Other contestants have done things that were not "TEEN IDOL" appropriate, yet nobody noticed those, did they?!?
This whole thing is a joke! Maybe the kids should stand behind a curtain next year?? Maybe we should have blind judges?? Maybe then The Egyptian will definately get the ADA bathroom!! They'll need it for all the stuff they put up with!
Star, Alyssa, Destyni, and Mariah...best of luck. But, if you don't win...no big deal. You have better things to look forward to than this. Enjoy your gifts and share them with the world!
Christopher..maybe you and Betty should sit next to each at the finale??

Proud Mom wrote on Aug 29, 2008 11:34 PM:

Concerned Citizen---I hope that you will introduce yourself to Alyssa and me at the finals, I can't tell you how much it means to both of us that a stranger has stood up for Alyssa time and again whenever she comes under fire for being the top score.
As far as Alyssa's number, it was a song making fun of herself using some choreography she learned from "Anything Goes" There were 5 girls who did it in the show, one of the best ever at LTOB, with no complaints. There have been far more suggestive performances & outfits done by another contestant, also with no complaints.
I know Alyssa must be a good role model when sweet Mariah is more concerned about Alyssa's name not being called yet than with the fact that she has made the final herself. Alyssa has been insulted, called terrible names, even booed...yet she goes on, week after week, doing her best & helping the other kids to do their best as well. I could not be more proud of her.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 29, 2008 11:03 PM:

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 29, 2008 11:01 PM:

First of all, Hannah, if you didn't witness it...then keep your comments to yourself.
Next, Funk Bro, Doesn't Matter, Bon, etc. It sounds to me like we're having a stupid little teenage, snot nosed popularity contest. Obviously you don't like Ms. Birrer so you must be friends of another contestant?? Wow! Way to ue the website to your advantage. Maybe the judges will let you influence them and decide who the winner should be. Puh-lease...time to start growin' up kids!
Ms. Birrer, the judges didn't think there was anything inappropriate about your performance. If they had, they would have commented on it. What we have here is a buncha' sore losers who obviously think they need to tear you down. Maybe you have something they wished they had?!? Hmmm...food for thought. Make 'em eat their words and keep up the good work!

Betty, if you are unhappy that your favorite didn't win, that's fine but don't try to smear and slander another contestant. I have known Alyssa and her mother for quite awhile now. Alyssa is a fine, young lady and a positive role model for teens. Her mother is a single parent doing an incredible job of raising two daughters on her own. If there was anything remotely "inappropriate" about that number,(1)she wouldn't have allowed Alyssa to perform it and (2)I'm sure the judges would have commented on it.
I have seen other contestants make suggestive actions and grab their crotches on stage and I felt that was out of line but I seen nothing offensive or dirty about Alyssa's number and by the audience's response they didn't either.
You should be ashamed of yourself for making such a rude, vulgar comment about a 15 year old girl and I think you owe this family an apology!

What she did was a top notch, very entertaining Broadway style number. It reminded me of a show I seen at Little Theatre on the Bay a couple of years ago. The kid can sing, act, dance, etc. Should we be upset with Destyni because of "wearing the flag"?? People were arrested for that back in the 60's ya' know...
Those girls went out there, did a fabulous job and entertained the audience. Alyssa, be proud and don't pay any attention to these "small minded Coos Bay" comments. I've seen alot worse in this competition...
Congratulations girls. I look forward to September 20th!
