County does a poor job at park

My family just recently had the opportunity to spend the weekend at LaVerne Park, 14 miles from Coquille.

I am appalled at the condition of one of our most popular county parks. The personnel who work there make good money (no doubt). However, I can’t figure out what they do to earn these wages. The park is in sad shape.

When visiting other county parks, you find the individual campsites are clean and picked up of the last campers trash, watered and even swept out. Not LaVerne.

Most of the trailer sites aren’t even level, therefore you have to put all sorts of boards under the wheels to set even. Even though most of the sites are gravel, they still could be leveled out. The restroom facilities are original, I’m quite sure. At least at Powers, you don’t have to pay to shower because they have installed nice water-saver showers.

My question to our parks director and county commissioners is, why aren’t all parks treated more equally?

The county offers a $25 discount to senior citizens. What a great deal this is. You only have to stay two nights and you have nearly paid for the card. These cards are good for two years and with the gas prices so high, it makes it more affordable to spend time in your own backyard.

I have heard that the county parks are no longer in the general fund budget. Who’s idea was this?

Obviously there needs to be some reorganization. Maybe the good thing to do would be to put a commissioner in charge who knows nothing about running the department.

Think of the road master fiasco!

I encourage the citizens of Coos County who use these parks to complain as well. Maybe LaVerne Park will get some help.

Yes, the bathrooms are older, but you are camping and they could be outhouses!Part of the park's beauty is the nature. There is only one paid ranger and it is the county's biggest park! I am proud of Laverne and most everyone I know is too! If you don't like it, maybe you should go to a hotel next time!

Hello are you listening to yourselves, What did you expect? You want all the Perks of the Parks yet there is no MONEY in the budget. Whats more important making sure someone is there to pick up some slobs garbage so you dont have to look at it or would you like to know that we actually have a sheriffs office that could do regular patrols instead of trying to decide which areas are considered most in need of patrols.

Laverne Park is one of our most visited parks besides our park in Charleston. We work hard for the little amount of money that we receive compared to others in the county. The sites are very nice and accomodating for RV's and are typically picked up unless you come in right after another camper left the site. It is not even a comparison to compare Powers and Laverne, as the usage is not even remotely close to the same. Powers brings in $4,000.00 a year in revenue versus the thousands of people who use Laverne.

We are glad that parks is no longer int he general fund, so that way we don't risk having our fee driven funding and employees cut for another department that is completely in need of the general fund.

I applaud the commissioners for dealing with the road fiasco, since the commissioners took a more active role in the roads there has definitely been more accountability and more repair and maintenance work done in the last year then in the last ten on our roads.

This must have been something that has recently happened because just before I left Coos County three years ago, I had visited LaVerne Park and it was cleaner then Rooke-Higgins, Golden and Silver Falls parks which I have always found to be eceptionally clean when I have visited them. This is too bad that this is happening. I guess not many people have pride in Oregon anymore. That is a real shame!
