Sports Briefs: Giants lose Umenyiora for season

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee.
Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus.
The two-time Pro Bowler will have surgery on Tuesday. The normal recovery lasts four months, Coughlin said, adding that a non-surgical option was not discussed.
New York rival Washington will be missing a defensive end itself after Jason Taylor was hurt. He’s expected to miss 10-14 days with a sprained right knee, putting his availability in doubt for the season opener against the Giants on Sept. 4.
Oakland lost two players from its already-thin offense to season-ending knee injuries when receiver Drew Carter and fullback Oren O’Neal went down in Saturday night’s 24-0 loss to Arizona.
Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer broke his nose during Saturday night’s preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, but coach Marvin Lewis said he should be ready for the regular season.
Falcons name Ryan starting QB
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Rather than give Matt Ryan a few games to watch from the sideline, the Falcons decided to throw the rookie into the fire as their starter.
First-year Atlanta coach Mike Smith said the No. 3 pick in the draft outperformed Chris Redman, Joey Harrington and D.J. Shockley on the field and in the classroom. In Smith’s view, there was nothing ceremonial about this announcement even though Ryan signed a six-year, $72 million contract in May.
Though Ryan is a rookie, Smith likes the fact that his quarterback is 23 and spent four seasons in a respected football program at Boston College.
The Falcons signed veteran tight end Marcus Pollard on Sunday, adding experience and a receiving threat at the position.
The Falcons released tight end George Cooper, who was signed on Aug. 4.
Pollard, a 14-year veteran, was released by New England on Wednesday. He has 349 career receptions for 4,280 yards and 40 touchdowns in 13 seasons, most with Indianapolis. He led Seattle tight ends with 28 catches for 273 yards last season and signed with New England as a free agent in April.

PARAMUS, N.J. — Vijay Singh won The Barclays for a record fourth time, matching Sergio Garcia with a long birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff and finishing off the Spaniard with another birdie on the second extra hole.
The 45-year-old Fijian closed with a 1-under 70 to match Garcia (70) and Kevin Sutherland (68) at 8-under 276 on the sun-baked Ridgewood Country Club course, the first-time site after 41 seasons at Westchester Country Club.
Singh, the 1993, 1995 and 2006 winner at Westchester, earned 11,000 FedEx Cup points in the playoff opener to take the lead with 109,500 points — 5,125 ahead of second-place Garcia.
Kerr wins LPGAevent in Portland
PORTLAND — Cristie Kerr sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, defeating Helen Alfredsson and Sophie Gustafson to win the Safeway Classic.
Kerr, Alfredsson and Gustafson finished 54 regulation holes at 13-under par 203. Alfredsson and Gustafson missed slightly longer birdie putts during the playoff before Kerr made hers.
It was Kerr’s 11th career victory on the LPGA Tour. Kerr, whose last victory was the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open, rallied from four shots down going into the final round with a 7-under par 65, the lowest round of the tournament.
Kite takes second Boeing title
SNOQUALMIE, Wash. — Tom Kite surged past Scott Simpson with three birdies in four holes on the back nine and finished at 14-under to win his second Boeing Classic title.
It’s the first victory for Kite since winning the 2006 Boeing Classic in a playoff over Keith Fergus, and the 10th Champions Tour title in his career. Kite had a 6-under 66 on Sunday, finishing two shots ahead of playing partner Simpson.
Lee youngest Amateur champion
PINEHURST, N.C. — Danny Lee became the U.S. Amateur’s youngest champion, supplanting Tiger Woods by holding off Drew Kittleson 5 and 4.
The 18-year, 1-month-old Lee is six months and 29 days younger than Woods was when he won the first of his three Amateurs in 1994.

Massa wins Formula One race
VALENCIA, Spain — Ferrari’s Felipe Massa won the European Grand Prix for his fourth Formula One victory of the season, leading wire-to-wire to finish comfortably ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton in second.
Massa easily held onto his lead after starting from the pole position and finished 5.6 seconds ahead of Hamilton’s McLaren on the 3.4-mile street circuit. BMW Sauber’s Robert Kubica was third.

Miami suspends seven players
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Miami coach Randy Shannon suspended starting quarterback Robert Marve and six others for the team’s season opener Thursday night against Charleston Southern.
Marve, a redshirt freshman, will miss the game due to an incident stemming back to last year. He was arrested Oct. 31 for smashing a car mirror and was initially charged with two misdemeanors. Those were later lifted, but Marve is being punished by the University now.
Miami officials would not say why the other six players were suspended.
The other suspended players are running backs Damien Berry and Eric Houston, defensive end Adewale Ojomo, defensive back Randy Phillips, wide receiver Kayne Farquaharson and long snapper Chris Ivory. Miami officials would not say why those six were suspended.
