I have an idea. How about the council is forced to hold there meetings at the bottom of the hill behind Sapphires. Do you think a solution might finally present itself? Maybe a water park with a mud-slide? Enough is Enough. I bet if this was by the proposed boardwalk or near a councilor's house that house would have been demoed 1 1/2 years ago. I think SWOCC has leadership classes, maybe we should all chip in for them.

Well, looks like another reason for the council in North Bend to move on to another agenda item please, we looked around in the council chambers and couldn't find where we left those gosh darn BACKBONES!!North Bend needs to clean the chambers and start over with folks that want to do more than sit up higher than everyone else.

I agree with, "does any-one remember", if those houses were lost due to a landslide back then, did they think another one wouldn't occur? Duh...I think Sapphires should look for a new location. Leave Mr.Guirado alone. He bought the house and he can do with it how he sees. If the city gives permits to let the restaurant build, then its both their faults...not the homeowner.

Just another reason for us to have a whole new set of officials in office. The old ones just don't have a clue and are too worried about being liked to get the vote rather than make a decision with some backbone and stick to their guns before someone is seriously hurt....and oh yeah, we all know who is going to foot the bill for all of this mess one way or the other, yep you guesses, we the taxpayers....

First off no names-But I am pretty sure a few of you are talking about a different establishment than the one I frequent. Saphires is awesome. the food healthy and tasty if you season it with the right juices which you get to choose yourself. The owner has done a great job on the appearance and the staff. The gals are always quick and friendly my children love drawing on the table clothes. It is an awesome place to dine. As for the house - Do not blame Saphires for this slum lord. I happen to know of multiple rentals he has none are in great shape.
PS I AM NOT FRIENDS WITH THE FOLKS THAT OWN SAPHIRES I honestly believe they are an asset to our community.

I hope the other houses on the top of that hill are holding on for dear life, because, as I am sure they know, once that house goes it is just going to be like a domino effect! Then the good ol' city of N.B. will be left scratching their heads, because THEY did not fix that hill years ago. Inquiring minds want to know, who owns the hill itself, N.B. or the property owners up above or down below? Does anyone know?
newbee wrote on Aug 26, 2008 6:58 PM:
Wow "reader" it seems to me you have a problem with Sapphires itself and needed to unload. Possibly you are a restraunt owner and Sapphires has taken some of your customers? I have eaten there, and yes I like the food and the staff seemed clean to me. No, I am not a friend , and I dont know the owner. New to the area or not I have my vision. I can see that this house is ready to fall off the cliff. It is an eye sore. It is dangerous and I think the City should be held liable if they do not take action. Have you been following the history with this house? I have and I think it is time for North Bend to do some thing.
Does Anyone Remember... wrote on Aug 26, 2008 4:09 PM:
Back in the early 80's there were houses at the bottom of that hill? Then one day a huge landslide came flowing down crushing all of them except the one that still remains on the property. I do know that a little boy was severly injured in that slide and he eventually died years later from those injuries. My question is this, why were permits issued to build this restaurant allowed in the first place knowing the history of this hill? I believe the fault lies with the city of N.B. and the owner of Sapphires for full well knowing this and building there anyway, not the homeowner! They are just trying to pass the buck, when & if anyone needs to be sued it is the homeowner sueing the city of N.B. for allowing this to happen in the first place!

THE PANCAKE OWNER IS TO BLAME FOR THE CUTTING OF THE TREES.. BUT FOR THE HOUSE TO "NOT" SLIDE... THAT MEANS THE Sapphire's Mongolian Grill NEEDS TO FIX THEIR END FIRST BEFORE THE "SLIDING HOUSE"....
Cc wrote on Aug 26, 2008 2:50 PM:
That was a stupid spot to build a restaurant anyway. No one seems to remember that there used to be houses where Sapphire's is now. That hill sliding is the reason those houses are no longer there. If Sapphire's had've gotten the correct permits from the city before they started digging, we wouldn't even be in this mess. Why doesn't someone hold Sapphire's accountable? I'm all about new businesses being brought in but not if it's mediocre food served in a building that looks like a strip club.

Mayor Wetherall needs to step up and put this to an end but he doesn't have it in him to do so. Just like when he was a teacher, always wanting everyone to like him and afraid to make waves. Pulling the trigger on the demolition of a house that cannot be saved and is not worth saving might upset the owner and Wetherall wouldn't want that on his conscious.

Well BULLDOG - thanks for agreeing about the MSG disappointment.
As for NEWBEE - are you new to the area? Are you related to the owners? or just friends? The food is bla - the employees working there are NOT clean - i tried the place after it was open for about a month - i kept hearing it was a waste of $$ - but i gave it a shot - i enjoy trying new foods and i was honestly excited about it comging to town... at first. Then i experienced the food and the employees - OMG. Food is bla and not really anything 'special' in my personal opinion. As for the employees - when i see them tossing their spatulas and dropping them - and then PICKING them up and using them without washing them - thats enough for me to see that they are not managed well - or aware of OSHA rules. Yes, the building is nice.. but so is the library.

well i am not that close to this story . but. wasnt the grill build recently? why is it they did not have geosurveys and such before construction? the hillside all along that road has always been unstable or dangeroushalf the hillside houses are on the move or losing ground to movement. perhaps its not just the houses fault and problem. not sure where the property line is. but yes would be nice if they get in gear,,

You know, if the City of NB would just inforce their city ordiance, the problem would be solved. It is right there in black and white, just do your job city manager and city counsel and do it NOW before someone gets killed. Now that the city DOES know there is a problem and is NOT inforcing their ordiance, if someone DOES get hurt now, not only the property owner, but now the City of NB will also get sued. I hope no one gets hurt but if they do, wouldn't it be nice to OWN NORTH BEND. Whether the city likes it or not, a city ordiance IS A LAW just like any other law, if if they do not inforce THEIR ordiance (CITY LAW), then THEY are liable.

New boss wrote on Aug 26, 2008 3:21 AM:
Two things are obvious... the owner of the house has no intention of tearing it down or stabilizing it, and the city is as usual going to drag it's feet until it's too late.
Put the two together, and the owner of Saphires will own this city after his business is crushed and someone gets hurt. Welcome your new City Manager...

My god NB City Council, are you people stuck on stupid?
Demolish the d*** thing!

Sapphires is one of the best looking buildings in North Bend. I think "reader" needs to get educated. Isn't the city of North Bend trying to bring in business or possibly save what they have? There is definately a lack of testicular fortitude in North Bend. The hillside looks terrible and if I were the Sapphires owner I would sue the City of North Bend for everyday they allowed this house to hang on the edge and hurt his business.
Bulldog wrote on Aug 25, 2008 5:37 PM:
Given the disappointment that it Sapphire's Mongolian Grill, perhaps an intentional slide could be arranged to kill two birds with one stone?

Is anyone surprised that there was yet another extension made for Mr. Guirado? It seems that's all the city of NB is willing to do... allow him extension after extension when it looks by his absence of attendance that he has no interest in removing his hazardous property. Get a clue City of NB!
cmon city of NB wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:31 PM:
Why on earth would you keep giving extensions to a person who isn't doing anything about his own property? What does that say about you, city of NB?
reader wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:19 PM:
Yes, what is it with the delay? Is there someone living in the house? Does not seem like it can be saved - deadlines are given for a reason -
Suing each other? OMG - can we just get over it? This town has many other things to focus on - yet, we worry about a house that is no able to be 'saved' and a restaurant that does not seem to really be what this town needed - we have enough places to eat - the place is empty anyway...
Nick wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:18 PM:
I was of the belief that this issue would be resolved, you know, within the last year. Now they're going to postpone this deadline once again?
Frankly, someone is going to be out quite a bit of money for this whole fiasco. The longer the city drags their feet, the more likely it is that they will be held liable for any damage caused to the restaurant. Sadly, in this sue-happy society, once a government organization has admitted knowledge of a potentially hazardous situation, they put themselves in a bad spot.
coast friend wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:06 PM:
Good Lord, what does it take to get these officals to do the right thing.
I thought their job was to protect and oversee the city residents.
It seems like they will wait till someone goes get hurt or damage done.
Maybe the restraunt can sue the officals if that happens.
Just another case of owners not being made to accept responsibilty for the property they own. This town will not get any better till we elect people who are not afraid to take a stand.
no name wrote on Aug 25, 2008 1:00 PM:
YES!!!why not extend the deadline, that seems to be the only work being done on the whole issue.
Mark Smith wrote on Aug 25, 2008 12:51 PM:
I agree, lets put this off until the rainy season when it is more likely to slide down the hill or be more dangerous to fix.
