AARP offers local safe-driving course for area’s senior citizens

Monday, August 25, 2008 |
With costs of gas and other things rising, senior citizens may feel pressure to review their finances and save wherever possible. One way is to reduce auto insurance costs and the AARP is offering its Safe Driving Class as an option next month.
The schedule for the eight-hour class is:
n 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the First United Methodist Church, 2289 Meade St., North Bend. There will an half hour for lunch. Participants must bring their own meals.
The class will discuss loss of hearing, sight and medical problems and their impact on driving, a press release said. The class focuses on ways to help seniors become aware of these issues, reviewing driving skills so they may drive safely for many more years.
All insurance companies doing business in Oregon must offer a discount to people older than 55 who complete the class. The defensive driving discount is given, in addition, to all other discounts received by the policyholder. People younger than 55 also may take the class, but will not receive a discount from their insurance company.
There is a $10 fee for class materials.
