ST. LOUIS — Steven Jackson signed a six-year, $44 million contract, ended a 27-day holdout, and was on the field for practice with the St. Louis Rams. And all was forgiven.

The 235-pound running back had been entering the final season of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. Jackson got a deal that includes more than $20 million in bonuses and puts him third on the salary scale on the team, trailing only quarterback Marc Bulger and tackle Orlando Pace and fifth among NFL running backs.

Steelers sign Farrior

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed linebacker James Farrior to a five-year, $18.2 million contract extension that includes a $5 million signing bonus.

Farrior’s agent, Ralph Cindrich, said the contract is meant to keep the 12-year veteran with the team until he retires. The bulk of the contract is for the first three seasons, valued at $12.6 million, including $10 million in the first two years.

Merriman has ligament damage

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman, who has missed more than a week of practice because of a sore left knee, said Thursday night that he has ligament damage and is evaluating his options.

The trouble is “a loose ligament and (I’m) waiting to get more info on what I need to do,” Merriman said in an e-mail to the North County Times.

Merriman underwent surgery to repair cartilage damage five months ago but has had persistent pain in the knee during training camp. He traveled this week to Birmingham, Ala., so the knee could be examined by Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation.

Merriman last played in the Aug. 9 preseason opener against Dallas and has not practiced since then.

Houston’s Cook arrested

HOUSTON — Houston Texans fullback Jameel Cook was arrested and charged with marijuana possession Wednesday.

A Fort Bend County sheriff’s deputy stopped Cook at about 7:30 p.m. because his 2007 Mercedes sedan had no front license plate or registration sticker, sheriff’s department spokeswoman Terriann Carlson said Thursday.

He’s free on a $500 bond after authorities said he had about two grams of marijuana, no valid Texas driver’s license and no proof of liability insurance.

The 29-year-old Cook was charged with a misdemeanor after the deputy searched the car and found a plastic bag containing two grams of marijuana, Carlson said.

The team would not comment.

Cook, who lives in Missouri City, joined the Texans in 2006 and played in all of the team’s games last season. He previously had played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted him in 2001.

Glavine has surgery

NEW YORK — Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine underwent surgery on his left elbow and shoulder and is expected be ready for spring training.

Glavine’s partially torn tendon in his elbow was repaired by Dr. James Andrews, who also cleaned up Glavine’s shoulder. The Braves said the 42-year-old left-hander should be able to start a throwing program by January.

Glavine isn’t under contract for next season and only wants to pitch for Atlanta, close to his home and family.

Blue Jays pick up Bautista

TORONTO — Utilityman Jose Bautista was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named. The 27-year-old Bautista hit .242 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs in 107 games for Pittsburgh this season, then was sent to Triple-A this month.

Despite his demotion, Bautista has already homered more times this year than any player for the Blue Jays, whose 87 home runs are the fewest in the American League. Matt Stairs leads Toronto with 11 homers.

Jorge Sosa suspended

NEW YORK — Former major league pitcher Jorge Sosa, now in the Seattle Mariners organization, was suspended on Thursday for 50 games after testing positive under baseball’s minor league drug program.

The 31-year-old right-hander, who began this season with the New York Mets, tested positive for an amphetamine — considered a performance-enhancing substance — while pitching for Triple-A Tacoma in the Pacific Coast League.

The suspension is effective immediately.

Seattle signed Sosa to a minor league contract in July after he was designated for assignment by the Mets on May 13.

Sosa was 4-1 with a 4.10 ERA in 20 games for the Mets this season after going 9-8 with New York in 2007. After making his debut with Tampa Bay in 2002, Sosa also had stints with Atlanta and St. Louis in seven major league seasons.

His career mark is 40-49 with five saves and a 4.67 ERA in 254 major league appearances, including 88 starts.

Mahan leads at Barclays

PARAMUS, N.J. — Hunter Mahan opened with an unlikely eagle after spinning in a sand wedge from 98 yards and never let up, shooting a 9-under-par 62 to take the first-round lead at The Barclays in the FedEx Cup playoff opener.

England’s Paul Casey shot a 66, and Bo Van Pelt, Kevin Streelman, Mathew Goggin, Charley Hoffman and afternoon starter Dudley Hart had 67s. Steve Stricker, the winner last year at Westchester Country Club, topped the group at 68.

PINEHURST, N.C. — Danny Lee, the world’s top-ranked amateur at 18, cruised past both of his opponents in match play and moved within three wins of supplanting Tiger Woods as the youngest champion in U.S. Amateur history.

He dominated Clemson freshman Jacob Burger 5 and 4 in the second round, then defeated Wichita State’s Connor McHenry 7 and 6 in the round of 16.

Derek Fathauer needed extra holes in both of his matches, including 22 to outlast Kevin Tway. He sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the fourth hole to advance to the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Also advancing to the semifinals were Drew Kittleson, Morgan Hoffman, Adam Mitchell, Charlie Holland, Patrick Reed and Graham Hill.
