The Dora pie bakers might have been singing a Song of Sixpence on Thursday, but it was fruit not blackbirds they put into their pies headed for this weekend’s Blackberry Arts Festival.
The Friends of the Dora Library, including members Laura Rose, Irma Curtis, Margie Knowlton and Margie Thompson, readied approximately 300 mini-pies to sell at the Coos Bay festival this weekend. Pies are available in six varieties, including an apple pie crisp and wild blackberry pie, and proceeds will benefit the Dora library.
“We’re matching funds for the expansion and remodel of the Dora Library,” Rose explained.
The friends first began baking the fruit pies as a fundraising effort last year.
“We were thinking of something new, something never seen available at festivals,” Rose said.
She thought back to a similar project of her mother’s at the Blackberry Arts Festival 20 years before — mini pies sold very well.
“Within hours, they were gone,” Rose said.
The Friends are familiar with the modern festival, and hope to find a niche with the reincarnated mini pie.
“There was nothing that you could just sit down and eat, as far as packaged pies go,” Rose said.
In addition to pies, the friends plan to sell hand-crafted goods, such as quilts, jams and jellies, syrups, and a blackberry buckle pastry. The buckle has a cake bottom and a berry filling with a crumble top.
“That, I think, will be a very popular thing,” Rose said. “They’re very yummy.”
