Amyone who brings up the 'drop in moral standards' thing - i cant think of a period in history where moral standards were oh so perfect so thats just crap! I am a member of the tribe and was horrified to read this had passed. I signed a petition to have this go to general vote for all the tribal members to decide on. I hate the fact that I am now going to be known for being in the tribe of gay marriage. I can say now this is all for insurance reasons. If they are not married the "partner" will not receive coverage, this is just a way to get around paying for coverage. I have also thought of dis-enrolling in the tribe so I am not going to be made fun of walking down the street from people who know me. I left Coos County the minute I graduated high school. I was raised in a deeply religious family and finally opened my eyes and saw that many of the same "community" were gay and suffering because of our intolerance. I have no problems with gays marrying, I am just sorry we "straights" have made such a joke of marriage. As for the country being "founded" on religious principle - people need to read the history of our founding fathers - they were rebelling not only against England but enforced religion - They were a pretty diverse lot.

I have friends that are gay. I consider them family. I would go to their wedding if I was invited. And I would have a wonderful time. But I can't help feeling that it is not the way nature intended for us to live. I can credit that to living with a chatholic upbringing and being Native. I don't understand how a council of tribal members would allow something like this unless one of them are gay.

this is in keeping with the long standing native american tradition of the revered "two-spirit" individual - I can't speak for the Coquille Tribe, but know that this was commonplace amongst many of the tribes before the Europeans arrived and moved onto their land. I wish I was "above the law" so to speak. I have friends that are gay, but I do not agree with their lifestyle. They are nice people, but that doesn't mean I believe the life they are living is right. There is a man and a woman for a reason. There is major moral decay in this country. And I too wonder what the forefathers of the indian tribes would think. Anyone got any answers in regards to that?

If there is a group that is trying to go against the foundation of what I believe America is founded, I have the right to boycott their business.
