Teams track sleeper fires from storm

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 |
Coos Forest Protective Association fire crews and aircraft discovered four additional fires Tuesday from the lightning that hit southern Oregon over the weekend.
Three small fires were located in the Elliott State Forest and one fire was just west of Camas Valley in Douglas County. All of the fires are between 1/4- and 1/2-acre in size and contained. CFPA has responded to seven fires resulting from the thunderstorm activity.
Fire crews were assisted by one helicopter and two timber fallers during the suppression effort.
CFPA firefighters are keeping an eye out for smoldering or sleeper fires that might come to life with the return of warmer, drier weather.
Fire managers want people to take extra caution when working or recreating outdoors.
“We need everyone to do their part to prevent human caused fires during this thunderstorm activity period,” said CFPA spokesman Tom Fields in a press release.
“Resources throughout our district and the state are pretty well committed to putting out or searching for lightning fires. So a careless fire that takes crews away from the mission at hand could be costly.”
