Coos Bay investigators say an arsonist is to blame for a fire Monday that damaged a home on Norman Avenue, according to Chief Stan Gibson of Coos Bay Fire & Rescue.

Investigators found multiple locations in the building where fires were set, Gibson said in a press release. The fire was reported at 8:31 a.m., but the fires could have been set hours earlier, Gibson said.

When they arrived at 266 Norman Ave., firefighters noticed the front door was unlocked. Also, a window on the back side of the house had been broken out prior to the fire, Gibson said.

“The fire may have burned up to four hours of when (it was) reported, according to the burn patterns,” Gibson said.

Three engines, two support vehicles and 18 firefighters responded to the call. They had it under control within 15 minutes. Damage to the house is estimated at $35,000 and $15,000 to the contents, the press release said. Early reports indicated the fire was confined to a back room, although moderate smoke damage was reported throughout the building.

The owner, Robert Hanna, was not home when the fire started. No one was hurt during the fire fight.

Gibson said he has no information on any suspects and there haven’t been any other arsons recently in the city.

Even so, the Coos Bay fire was not the only intentionally-caused fire reported this week.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested in a separate arson case in Coquille on Tuesday. According to the Coos Bay Police log, at about 1:41 p.m. a gate on fire was reported at 190 N. Elliott St.

The boy was taken into custody on a charge of first-degree arson.

He was remanded to juvenile detention, according to the log.

Coos Bay police officers now are in charge of the Norman Avenue arson investigation. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Coos Bay Police Department at 269-8911 or Coos Stop Crime at 267-6666.
