Guitar heroes

A guitar clinic and concert featuring Jay Roberts, winner of the Jimi Hendrix National Electric Guitar Competition and Seattle’s Best Guitarist, and Ben Lacy, who was voted as one of Guitar Player Magazine’s Top 100 Unsung Guitar Heroes in 2007, will take place on Tuesday at the Sawmill Events Center, 3491 Broadway St., North Bend.

The guitar clinic is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the concert, with the concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for the concert (in advance), $12 for the concert (at the door) and $25 for the clinic and concert.

Camping in Bandon

The local Good Sam Chapter can offer you camping and companionship each month.The next camp out is at the Bandon RV Park on Thursday through Sunday.

Saturday

Step in order

The next Sets in Order Square and Round Dance Clubdance will be Saturday. Coleeta Quigley will call, and Denise Harris will cue the rounds. Pre-rounds will begin at 7:30 p.m., with square dancing at 8, at the Coquille Community Center.

Hot Umpqua Nights

The Elkton Community Education Center will present its Hot Umpqua Nights Art Auction in conjunction with the opening of the second-annual Elkton Quilt show, Saturday, at the center, 15850 Highway 38 West, Elkton. The evening will begin with a reception at 4 p.m.

Donated art works, in various mediums, to be auctioned for the benefit of ECEC, can be viewed from 4 to 6:30 p.m.  

Local artists, including Elkton residents Joan Arsenault and Jane Wood, are allowing their works to be auctioned.

Bidding will start at 6:30 p.m., on the greenhouse patio, adjacent to the quilt show.  

Wine, buffet refreshments and music will start at 4 p.m. and continue throughout the evening.

The quilt show is sponsored by River’s Edge Winery and will be open at the ECEC Greenhouse from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24 and Wednesday, Aug. 27, and Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30-31.

A donation of $2 will benefit the reconstruction of historic Fort Umpqua.  

This year’s quilt show has a theme of “Quilts are Forever.” The featured quilter is Roberta Freytag of Elkton. A reception honoring quilt show entrants and art donors will begin at 4, with refreshments by the Elkton quilters.

Human art

Oil paintings by award-winning artist Monte Rogers are being exhibited on Coos Bay Public Library walls during the month of August.

The exhibit features human subjects, a library press release said. While western themes dominate his work, Rogers paints people in all sorts of narrative life situations — beaches, fairs, amusement parks, or wherever he finds inspiration.

Rogers’ paintings may be found in prestigious collections around the world, including those of the Hearst and Gerber families.

His work also is shown in Europe, Asia and South America. He is represented on the Southern Oregon Coast by the Nautilus Gallery in North Bend.

Rogers is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He grew up in Oregon’s Hood River Valley and now makes his home in Bandon.

During his career as an illustrator of books, magazines, and advertisements in California, Rogers also taught composition, figure drawing and western painting.
