The dog days of summer have arrived and, appropriately enough, the Coos Bay City Council will have a canine-related discussion at its meeting Tuesday.

The Pacific Cove Humane Society has wanted to build an animal shelter in Coos County for years. The group’s leaders have talked to the city about building one on a piece of vacant city land next to John Topits Park. The 4.46 acres of undeveloped property sits east of Morrison Street and north of Pirates Court in Empire.

At Tuesday’s 7 p.m. meeting, the council will see a presentation about the animal shelter, and discuss the possibility of building an adjacent dog park. Pacific Cove’s President Janet Huggins is scheduled to make the presentation.

Huggins said in June that Coos Bay architect Lon Samuels has prepared designs, which include enclosed spaces for dogs and cats that limit noise disturbance.

Pacific Cove has said it needs at least one acre of land to build the shelter, which is designed to be built in phases. Once completed, it would  have room for between 30 and 40 dogs, 80 cats and other small pets.

The shelter would feature noise abatement materials and windows oriented to keep down the sound to avoid conflicts with neighbors.

City Manager Chuck Freeman said residents will have a chance to comment. He said the councilors may ask questions, but there won’t be any final decisions made about the proposal.

“We are a long ways from that,” Freeman said.

The council chambers are located at City Hall, 500 Central Ave.
