August ArtWalk is going to the dogs
It is the dog days of summer during the August ArtWalk from 5 to 8 p.m. at Coos Head Food Store on Thursday, Aug. 14
This month’s event is about our best friends — our pets.
A representative from Solid Gold Pet Food will be visiting to offer samples, give suggestions, and answer customers questions.
Wine tasting will follow a similar theme with pets on the label. Margaret Ann has selected several great tasting wines that feature dogs, cats, rabbits, and a goat.
Food sampling will feature Udo’s Oil. Customers may sample enjoyable recipes using these “good fats.”
ACF Practical Test
Aug. 15 — An American Culinary Federation practical test will take place on campus at Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. For information, or to sign up, call 888-7195.
Albacore Challenge
Aug. 16 — The Oregon Albacore Challenge will pit 16 West Coast chefs vying for a top prize of $500. OCCI is still looking for a few more competitors.
Food handler class on Tuesday
A Food handler class will be offered at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Sitkum Hall, Room 6, at Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.
Those taking the test should prepare by reading “Food Safety: Your Self-training Manual,” available online at http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/foodsafety/ or at local libraries.
Those who pass the exam and pay the $10 fee will be issued a food handler card. The class is sponsored by Coos County Public Health.

Pickling and cheese making workshops
The Coos County Extension Service Family Food Educator volunteers will be conducting a community workshop on making cheese.
On Saturday, Aug. 23, a second cheese making workshop on soft cheeses will be held at the Myrtle Point Extension office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This second class will offer the same basic cheese making as the first, with some updates as well as ideas for new flavors.
Pre-registration is encouraged and class size is limited. A $7 fee is collected to pay for printed materials and class supplies. For more information on the dates and times of the September and October workshops, call the Coos County OSU Extension Office, 572-5263 or (800) 730-4978.
Cranberry Food Fair on Sept. 12-13
The Cranberry Food Fair will be held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Bates Road Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13. Entries will be accepted from 9 a.m. until noon Friday, Sept. 12.
All entries must contain cranberries and be made from scratch. Participants may submit as many items as they wish in any and all categories. Categories include: main dish, quick breads, salads, candy, sauces/relish, berries, jam/syrup, juice, cakes, cookies, pies, desserts, diabetic and wine/cordials.
There also will be a children’s division. “If you have an entry that is not listed, we will make a category for it!” said Food Fair organizer Joye Olson. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. Friday and ribbons will be awarded upon completion of the judging.
The king or queen will be chosen by a panel of three judges and will be revealed at the Cranberry Festival Coronation. First- and second-runners-up also will be chosen. The king or queen will ride in the Cranberry Festival Parade on Saturday morning. Monetary prizes are awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners. The Food Fair is hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3440.

Six-week cooking class to be held at Boys & Girls Club
The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon, under the direction of The Mill Casino–Hotel’s Chef Dan Catanio, will be offering a six-week culinary arts program. The program will consist of six classes ranging from “The Art of Sandwich Making” to “Fruit Carvings and Decorations.” The program is open to all Boys & Girls Club members, ages 12-17, and will be held at The Mill Casino–Hotel. Cost is $30 per student with transportation provided to The Mill from the Boys & Girls Club Youth Center. The program will be offered from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Aug. 19 to Sept. 23. Students will need to be picked up from The Mill by their parents or guardians following each class. Space is limited.
