Chess players make the right moves

They attracted a crowd, the 24 chess players who gathered Aug. 9 at LaVerne Park in Coos County.
Players from Bandon, Myrtle Point and North Bend joined the fun with the Coquille players. The tournament attracted observers from the nearby campground to clap after watching some intense games.
Players were separated into four sections by abilities and ratings rather than grades.
Final results
* Over 1,000-rated division
1st place: Seth Perkins, 10th grade, Coquille
2nd place: Stephen Mast, 10th grade, Coquille
3rd place: Tasha Keller, ninth grade, Coquille and Jessi Ross, ninth grade, Coquille
* 650 to 1000-rated section
1st place: Sarai Perkins, sixth grade, Coquille
2nd place: Mark Fontaine, ninth grade, North Bend
3rd place: Jace Sperling, fourth grade, Coquille
* 400 to 650-rated section
1st place: James Hopper, fourth grade, Coquille
2nd place: Nicole Romine, seventh grade, Coquille
3rd place: Chase Kulm, fifth grade, Myrtle Point
* Unrated and under 400
1st place: Andrew Lowe, eighth grade, Bandon
2nd place: Tina Roman, 10th grade, Myrtle Point
3rd place: Sara Roman, 10th grade, Myrtle Point
The Coquille Chess Club is selling tickets for a Sawdust Theatre Benefit show scheduled Sept. 20. Proceeds will help the Coquille Chess Club attend state championships. Tickets are available at the Coquille Medical Offices for $15.
