It wasn’t a cougar, but the animal that attacked a Brookings man Tuesday on a remote mountain road was mean enough to send him to a medical clinic with injuries.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon State Police and U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services responded immediately, bringing in hound dogs to try to catch the beast, a press release said.

The man, who was not identified, said the animal bit and scratched him. He was treated at a Brookings medical clinic for undisclosed injuries and released the same morning.

Although hound dogs and other methods were used, the animal has not been found.

“We’re still investigating the incident,” said Mark Vargas, ODFW’s Rogue Watershed Wildlife Biologist. “It is unclear what kind of animal it was, but current evidence indicates it was not a large carnivore.”

ODFW encourages people who work and play in forested areas to know how to respond when encountering wild animals. For tips on dealing with animal encounters, go to the Web site at http://www.dfw.state.or.us/wildlife/living_with.
