Teen Idol competitors tighten performances

COOS BAY — There’s always drama in the theater.

In its first six weeks, the Bay Area Teen Idol contest has seen plenty — both good, in the form of strong performances, and bad, when disagreements over the results led to bickering and controversy.

It was Broadway night at the contest Thursday, but organizers took the opportunity to make their strongest statement yet that off-stage drama should be left outside the theater.

“We will not tolerate booing and rude comments,” master of ceremonies Mike Chavez informed the audience at the beginning of the show.

He explained that violators would be asked to leave or escorted out by police. “I know it’s a bummer, but we had a situation last week.”

After last week’s show, organizers received several complaints about a stream of inappropriate remarks coming from a parent of a contestant during other contestants’ performances.

There were no such incidents reported Thursday, when an audience of more than 300 filled the Egyptian Theatre in Coos Bay.

But that didn’t mean all the drama was gone. In keeping with the theme, contestants ratcheted up the theatrical elements of their performances, using costumes and props to bring characters from Broadway musicals to the stage in the first round.

The focus on performance continued in the second half, when an open choice round gave contestants the opportunity to be themselves.

Taking advantage of that opportunity made the difference in the top scores, according to Star Moralez, who placed first.

“All of us spend too much time trying to be like everyone else, but a little bit better,” Moralez said after the show. “I never wanted to be that. So I quit. So that’s what I’m gonna keep doing: what I want to do. … I don’t fit in. That’s a good thing.”

Moralez, 15, sang “I Know Where I’ve Been” from “Hairspray” and “Vienna” by Billy Joel.

Alyssa Birrer placed second with “Good and Evil” from “Jekyll and Hyde” and “The Thunder Rolls” by Garth Brooks. Destyni Fuller was third with “Cabaret” and LeeAnn Rimes’ “Ten Thousand Angels Cried.”

Two more contestants were eliminated: Mercedese Mannon and Krista Kilmer.

Both eliminations drew reactions of surprise among the show’s followers.

Mannon gave her best performance yet in the second round with the Dixie Chicks’ “Ready To Run.” While that drew only positive comments, judges advised her to use more of the stage after “Part of Your World” from “The Little Mermaid.”

“I thought she did enough to stay in,” said Marty Crouse, who works with the contestants in group rehearsals.

“But they want her to move around more.”

Kilmer also showed continued growth, particularly in her first-round performance of “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” from “My Fair Lady.”

Judge Kim Handsaker told Kilmer she’d be a shoo-in for the role of Eliza if “My Fair Lady” were being cast then.

“I see you blossoming more with every performance,” judge Barbara Bates told Kilmer after she sang Train’s “When I Look to the Sky.”

Kevin Freeman of the Young Bucs also judged for the first time. Alyssa Birrer was named the people’s choice winner for Aug. 7.

There was little surprise about Moralez taking the top score for the second time this year. Moralez was back in the form she showed in the first few weeks of the competition, after a couple of weeks in which she seemed to be having a harder time keeping up with Birrer, dropping to third place last week.

Moralez had an explanation for what was keeping her back: “I got caught up in the drama.”

do you have a hobbit charm on your bracelet?

YOU probably Do need a rest, Concerned Citizen.....from the looks of it, you must be simply exausted from sheer hatred. Who could attack a person as kind and positive as Darla obviously is??and by the way, you don't need to post who you think is going to win...it is obvious which camp you inhabit.you all share some of the same characteristics.
As for the rest of us-we're just 'praying' for fairness and justice at the Final.

"Concerned Citizen"-
It seems to me that you are quite the hypocrite! You certainly are showing a great example to these girls through this contest. Not ever have I read something so rude, arrogant, and utterly weak in my whole life! You talk a lot about how we should monitor what we say for the sake of these kids, but tell me, do you believe that you would let your child say these things that you have written to me and others ( Hal and etc.....), to someone else? Please don't tell me that you have children. Because you would be a terrible example to follow.
( And yes, I sure thought about this one before I wrote it) :)

Boy, that's an oxymoron..."innocent teen"...and there's nothing "innocent" about this "teen competition". I do agree with you though Curious. Let's all give it a rest(including the rain or we may not have a show this week)!

This is an innocent teen idol competition. Give it a rest.

"Shallow" Hal,
First of all, no I don't have a "high opinion" of myself(no more than anyone else on this site!)and arrogance has nothing to do with it. Just because I state the facts doesn't mean I'm arrogant...just honest! I was just giving "Funk Bro" a little taste of his own medicine...which, IN MY OPINION, he so richly deserved. I guess it's your turn now...if you're looking for an argument or a fight, call your ex-wife or go to a bar...maybe "Funk Bro" will join you. I'm sure you two will make a cute couple! Oh, and the only thing that I should really be "concerned" about is for an area as small as Coos County...we sure have alot of dumb people!

To the "Triple Threat",
You three girls know who you are...the bar has been raised for this competition. I hope to see more from you young ladies this weekend, but most of all...don't forget to have fun with what you're doing. KEEP IT UP!!!

Hal wrote on Aug 19, 2008 9:59 PM:

Concerned Citizen,
I bet you're the coolest person you know! Talk about negative and arrogant, you seem to have a very high opinion of yourself. You should be concerned.

Proud Mom wrote on Aug 19, 2008 12:08 AM:

These girls are excited to see their names and read the comments posted...people need to remember that they are kids and monitor their own comments both here and during performances.
Alyssa is wearing a bat charm bracelet now, as her way of laughing off some of the unkind things said to her right here and at the Egyptian.
Concerned citizen has said some wonderful things about Alyssa and the other kids...no complaints here.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 18, 2008 4:48 PM:

Funk Bro,
Wow! You're cool...I bet you're the coolest person you know, aren't you?!? That's the problem with these comment sites...anybody who can click a button can post their so called "opinion".
Maybe we should all show up to this week's show with stones and throw them at the loser?? If they can't handle it maybe their parents should get them a suit of armor and a shield!!
It's not this site that gives me reason to complain...it's comments like your's. Did you even think about your comment before you posted it?? I doubt it, just like you haven't thought about your previous comments. I know some African Americans and they're not too happy about your comment on "blacks and MoTown".
Hmmm...I wonder Punk...oh, I'm sorry..."Funk" Bro...do you like these comments I've made about you...ON THIS WEBSITE(where have I heard that before?)?? Are you... "handling" this very well??

Funk Bro wrote on Aug 18, 2008 3:34 PM:

As far as I know, comments are supposed to be your opinion as far as whats going on. If they can't handle reading it, their parents should monitor their internet sites.
I'm glad that this website gives "Concerned Citizen" something to complain about, however.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 18, 2008 12:13 PM:

Darla,
There is no "clear" winner. Alot can still happen and probably will...if you care to hear my other comments to Darla, go to the "Recount!" story and scroll on down...
As far as the rest of you who submit comments, let's keep them all up on the current week's blog. It would make it a whole lot easier to follow...and to debate!
Oh, and Darla...I have MY opinion as to who is going to win this competition as well. I don't post it however because I know all the girls read these comments. Just something for you to think about.

darla wrote on Aug 17, 2008 7:31 AM:

We really enjoyed watching Krista and hope she will come back next year. We also really love watching Star and are pleased with how centered she remains. It's refreshing to see someone with that much talent not let it go to her head. She's the clear winner this year!

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 15, 2008 4:28 PM:

Congratulations to the remaining contestants and kudos to all the young ladies involved in Thursday night's show.
I would like to point out that I saw something else that really impressed me Thursday night. I saw two performances where two young ladies took two mega hits from male artists and made them their own. I'm referring to Ms. Birrer's version of "The Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks and Ms. Moralez's version of "Viena" from Billy Joel. Great job ladies! I enjoyed both your performances tremendously. Thank you for taking chances and showing us that young girls can break the mold and sing more than "Britney" and "Disney"! I hope I see more of this...BRAVO!!!
