State wildlife officials will close the ocean recreational salmon fishery south of Cape Falcon to the California border at the end of the day Thursday. That’s when they expect fishermen will meet the coho quota for the season, a press release said.

“We had a quota of 9,000 hatchery coho this year,” said Eric Schindler, supervising biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Strong winds and poor ocean conditions kept many fishermen off the water during the early part of the season, which stretched the season longer than many expected.”

The season opened for fin-clipped coho on June 22 with a quota of 9,000 fish. By last week, fishermen had caught 8,462 coho by Sunday, which is 94 percent of quota.

Managers expect they’ll hit the quota Thursday.
