PORTLAND (AP) — A worker at the Oregon State Hospital’s Portland campus has been arrested on allegations of sexually abusing a patient.

Francisco Nunez, 56, of Milwaukie was charged with sodomy and official misconduct, and held in the Multnomah County Jail on $1.1 million bail.

Nunez was arrested after a hospital staff member witnessed an incident involving Nunez and a 47-year-old female patient, the state Department of Human Services said.

Nunez had been working for the department in housekeeping services for about five years.

Roy Orr, superintendent of the state mental hospital, said in a statement this weekend that he has asked Oregon State Police to expand its investigation to ensure the safety of all patients on the Portland campus.

The broader OSP investigation will begin early this week, and the DHS plans an internal investigation.

“I will not tolerate a single patient at Oregon State Hospital living in fear of assault,” Orr said.

“This was a serious incident that occurred within a vulnerable population and calls for far-reaching investigation to safeguard the well being of all our patients.”

The alleged victim remains at the Portland campus under elevated care.

“We are doing and will continue to do everything we need to do to provide care and support to our patient while conducting a sensitive but thorough investigation,” Orr said.
