‘Golf for Health’ tournament a success

The Bandon “Golf for Health”Classic was a big success, bringing in some $14,000 for the Southern Coos HealthFoundation to enhance healthcare services in Bandon.

The event drew 22 four-person teams.

The team of Dr. Richard Dowling, David Koch,Peter Erenfield and JonDodson won the event with an 11-under 61.

They were presented with the Magness Cup, the classic’s perpetual trophy, named after the late Bill Magness, who donated the land for Bandon’s new hospital on 11th Street.

Dr. Nicole Erenfeld was given a single shot at $1 million, but missed.

David King of Coos Bay won the par-19 putting course challenge created by Bandon Crossings professionals Mark Fiore and Chris Young.

Chivaroli &Associates Insurance Service was the event’s platinum sponsor, while Sterling Savings Bank was a gold-level sponsor. ComSpan, Structured,Advantage Dental Plan, McKesson,Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon and AIGRetirement were the silver-level sponsors.

Cedar Bend Stampede



The team of Mark Hockema, Cole Hockema, Hugo Treinen, Brett Martin and Toby Stanley combined to win the two-day Cedar Bend Stampede at Cedar Bend Golf Course last weekend.

The group shot a two-day total of 115, 29-under par, to win the scramble tournament by one shot over the group of Jim Barnes, John Shaw, Keith Wallin, Jim Grimes and Bill Smyth.

The top net score in the A flight was by Steve Salisbury, Lonnie Draheim, Dave Hodges, Jack Waibel and Mike Beckley, with a 102.

The best gross score in the B flight was by the team of Joe Camara, Dick Worley, Mike Shields, Bill Nelson and Guy Lawber, with a 123. The best net score in the flight was a 104, posted by the team of Dick Wold, Mike Hewitt, Tomas Hernandez, Scott Bendtzen and Warren Slater.

Dodie Blessing Tournament



The team of George Olivia, Dwayne Maneval, John Cossey, Larry Jones and Bill Smith posted the best score in the first of three Dodie Blessing golf tournaments.

The group had a score of 62, 9-under par, on the Ocean Dunes Golf Links Course in Florence. They also had the best net score, with a 42.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Veterans Affairs Hospice and Veterans Affairs Special Programs, which are no longer funded by the government.

Two additional tournaments are scheduled — Aug. 23 at Coos Country Club and Sept. 7 at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

Portland City Championship



Reedsport’s Monica Vaughn placed sixth in the intermediate division (12- to 14 years old) in the Portland City Junior Championship, also called the Bob Allard Memorial, this week.

Vaughn shot rounds of 84 and 86 to finish at 26 over par. Ashlee Pickerell of Salem won the event with a score of 149.

Oregon Women’s Stroke Play



Aubrey Vaughn of Reedsport finished 18th in the Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship this week, three spots in front of  Kellie Holmstedt of North Bend.

Vaughn’s two-round total was 162, 20-over par. Holmstedt was 26-over at 168.

Kendra Little of Eugene scorched the Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla with two rounds of 67 to finish at 8-under par.

Crawford fifth at Amateur qualifying



Marshfield graduate Kyle Crawford finished fifth in the recent U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier held at Eagle Point Golf Course.

Crawford shot rounds of 70 and 71 to finish at 3-under par, just missing a chance to participate in the U.S. Amateur in Rhode Island.

Mike Barry of Medford had the best score in the qualifier at 6-under, while Joel Dahmen of Clarkston, Wash., beat Paul Peterson of Corvallis in a playoff for the other spot in the tournament after both shot totals of 5-under.

Among other South Coast players, Jason Domingos of Bandon was 11th at 2-over, Jayme Berkowitz of Brookings was 12th at 4-over, Alden Peterson of Coos Bay tied for 15th at 7-over, Tim Tucker of Coos Bay was 28th at 13-over and Jordan Sweet of North Bend tied for 31st at 15-over.
