Three teams from the Sweet Spot Tennis Academy placed well at the five-state Sectional Team Tennis Championships.

Two teams competed in the 18-and-under championships in Washington the weekend of July 25-27 at the Tualatin Tennis Center.

The Sea Lions, with Brandon Benson, Heidi Boesl, David Perrin, Mallory Crocker, Jaime Moriarty, Brittney Morris and Brogran Trull, won the consolation title.

The Bay Area No Names, the club’s second team in the division, missed facing the Sea Lions for the consolation title by a single point. Members of the No Names were Marcus Boesl, Andrea Tison, Colby Trull, Keeandra Rodriguez, Nathan Kahler and Kaitlin Kirkaby.

The Viks from Forest Grove won the title, beating the Match Makers of Clackamas in the championship round and earning a trip to the national tournament in Alabama.

“It was a very tough tournament and both Bay Area teams played extremely well,” said Ed Thompson, who coaches all three Sweet Spot teams.

The players battled through extreme temperatures the entire weekend.

Thompson said one player who stood out was Heidi Boesl, who missed being eligible for the 14-and-under age group by just six hours, but still played in the No. 1 singles spot for the Sea Lions and also often doubled back to play mixed doubles.

The Bay Area Barracudas, a veteran group with a long history of success, won the consolation title at the 14-and-under championships in Tacoma, Wash., last weekend.

Members of the team were veterans David Stys, Brittney Wilson, Will Moriarty and Kylee Woodman and newcomers Keaten Baker and Michelle Chan.

“The teams were very tough, and most had seasoned players,” Thompson said.

Both Baker and Chan played well, Thompson said.

“The whole team ran like a well-oiled machine, but could not beat the two teams that played in the finals,” Thompson said.

The Breakers, of Bremerton, Wash., repeated as champions, beating the Robinswood team of Bellevue, Wash., in the championship match.

Thompson was proud of all his players.

“All the players in both divisions worked very hard and lifted their level of play, but this year the competitive level had greatly increased with more experienced players,” he said. “We will be back as we rebuild the teams’ depth, and the Bay Area will once again be the front-runners,” he said. I and all of the Bay Area are proud of their efforts.”
