DETROIT — Rookie reliever Brad Ziegler tied the Athletics’ record for consecutive scoreless innings and Oakland snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Emil Brown homered and Rajai Davis drove in two runs for Oakland, which hadn’t won since July 27 against Texas.

Marcus Thames homered for Detroit, which has lost seven of its last eight.

Ziegler pitched the eighth and ninth innings for his first save. He extended his scoreless streak to 37 consecutive innings to tie Mike Torrez’s club record, set in 1976.

White Sox 5, Red Sox 3

CHICAGO — Mark Buehrle took a shutout into the eighth and Chicago handed Jon Lester his first loss in 21⁄2 months.

The AL Central leaders hung on after Dustin Pedroia hit a three-run homer off Octavio Dotel in the eighth. Carlos Quentin led off the bottom half with his AL-leading 31st homer off Manny Del Carmen and his second in as many games, and Bobby Jenks pitched a scoreless ninth for his 23rd save in 26 chances.

Lester (10-4) suffered his first loss since May 25 after going 7-0 in his previous 11 starts. He allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings.

Indians 5, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO — Anthony Reyes allowed one run and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings to pick up his first win since being traded to Cleveland last month.

Ben Francisco and Shin-soo Choo each had two RBIs and the Indians rebounded from a 10-7 loss at Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. The Rays scored six runs in the ninth in that game.

Orioles 9, Rangers 1

BALTIMORE — Jeremy Guthrie allowed one run in seven innings to win his third straight start and Kevin Millar homered twice for Baltimore, sending Texas to its third straight loss.

Brian Roberts, Juan Castro and Ramon Hernandez each had two RBIs for the Orioles, who have won seven of 11. Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, one short of his career high.

Guthrie (9-8) gave up five hits, walked one and had four strikeouts. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in his last three starts.

Rays 5, Mariners 3.

SEATTLE — Carlos Pena hit his 21st home run and drove in another run and the Tampa Bay Rays increased their lead in the AL East to 31⁄2 games with a 5-3 victory over the Mariners on Friday night.

Tampa Bay’s lead over second-place Boston is its largest since July 7.

Two days after his dramatic, game-ending home run capped a six-run ninth inning for the Rays, Pena made up for the absence of Evan Longoria, the team’s leader in home runs and RBIs. Longoria is missing at least one day of his team’s season-long, 10-game road trip because of a bruised hand.

Angels 10, Yankees 5.

ANAHEIM, Calif.  — Torii Hunter had four hits with a home run and four RBIs, Howie Kendrick tied a career high with four hits and the Los Angeles Angels beat the New York Yankees 10-5 on Friday night.

Vladimir Guerrero had three hits and scored three runs for the Angels, who increased their AL West lead to a season-high 13 games after Texas’ 9-1 loss at Baltimore. Everyone in the starting lineup contributed to the 17-hit attack except leadoff batter Chone Figgins, who was 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.

Twins 4, Royals 1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kevin Slowey limited Kansas City to one run on seven hits in six innings, Joe Mauer drove in two runs and the Minnesota Twins took advantage of eight walks to beat the Royals 4-1 on Friday night.

Slowey (8-8) did not walk a batter and struck out two in 5 2-3 innings. It was the 16th time in 29 career starts that he has not allowed a walk. He is averaging 1.3 walks per nine innings this season.
