Allegany voters to decide park tax
From Staff Reports
Saturday, August 9, 2008 8:28 AM PDT
Coos County Elections Office staff will fire up their election machines this fall — two months early.
Voters in Allegany’s Millicoma River Park and Recreation District will receive ballots on a $125,000 five-year local option tax to maintain the community building. The ballots will be due on Sept. 26.
The summary of the local option tax filed with the Coos County Elections Office states the Community Building of the Millicoma River Park and Recreation District is in need of repairs and maintenance. The tax revenue would pay for that work. Property owners in the district will pay an estimated 71 cents per $1,000 of assessed value on property — if the levy passes. At least a 50 percent turnout is needed for the local option to pass.
Ballots will be mailed to all active, registered voters residing in the Millicoma River Park and Recreation District on Aug. 29, for the special election Sept. 26. Voters should receive ballots between Sept. 2 and 5. Military, overseas and out of state ballots will be mailed earlier. If voters have not received their ballots by Sept. 8, they should contact the Coos County Election’s office.
The U.S. Postal Service will not forward ballots, so if a voter has moved or changed a mailing address, the person must complete a new registration form to update the address. The last day for new registrations before this election is Aug. 26. |
