Teen Idol cuts three challengers

COOS BAY — Hearts pounded.

Breath shortened.

There were more than a few goosebumps, and even a few tingles.

When Bay Area Teen Idol followers look back on the 2008 competition, they probably won’t remember the parental squabbles that marred the early weeks of the contest.

For about 250 people who were at the Egyptian Theatre on Thursday night, what they’ll remember is Alyssa Birrer giving a performance of Journey’s “Faithfully” that took the competition to new heights.

“‘Faithfully’ was the best Teen Idol performance I’ve seen ever,” said judge Kim Handsaker, who is in her fourth year judging the contest.

She wasn’t exaggerating.

Handsaker was one of several people who waited in line to compliment Birrer and describe their reactions to a performance that had a few audience members waving their cell phones and drew a standing ovation from many more.

Birrer, 15, said the performance was special because she was singing her favorite song of all time during the ’80s round, the first half of Thursday’s event.

“I hope that what I’m feeling when I sing a song, that the audience can feel it, too,” Birrer said. “I feel so alive when I sing that song.”

She was easily the top scorer of the week, also besting the competition in the Motown round, when she sang “I Will Survive.”

“I was just getting my breath back from your first performance, and you took it away again,” Handsaker told Birrer during the show.

It was a great night all around for the contest, as nearly all the remaining contestants stepped up their performances.

Destyni Fuller placed second with Chicago’s “Will You Still Love Me?” and Kim Weston’s “Take Me In Your Arms.” Star Moralez was third with “Sister Christian” and “Heat Wave.” Moralez was also voted people’s choice winner for July 31.

Others giving strong performances included Caitlin Mansfield, Alisha Molloy and Mariah Rogers.

There were three contestants eliminated Thursday: Kara Shore, Teanna Engberg and Allison Warrick.

On a night when so many did so well, it didn’t take many mistakes to get knocked out of the contest.

Shore gave one of her best performances in the first round with “I Love Rock and Roll” but faltered in the second with “Superstitious.”

Engberg sang “What I Like About You” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Warrick had problems with pitch on “Material Girl,” improving slightly on “Lean On Me.”

Krista Kilmer, who was erroneously eliminated and then reinstated last week, managed to survive another round, as did Mercedese Mannon, who finished fourth from the bottom despite a strong improvement over last week, and Karissa Fults.

Judges for Thursday were Handsaker, Mike Campbell and Dennis Lindall.

Nine contestants remain as the contest continues at 6 p.m. next Thursday at the Egyptian Theatre, when the themes will be Broadway and contestant’s choice.

For Birrer, the challenge will be to continue to surprise her audience after setting the bar so high.

“I love doing good,” she said. “But it’s like, ‘Great, now I have to do even better.’”

wow people seriously KNOCK IT OFF WITH THE RUDE AND HURTFUL COMMENTS!.... stop complaining.... this thing was not ment to cause controversy... it is ment to give kids something to do and show off what they got! its is supposed to be a positive event!! some people seem to lose sight of that. so stop being so negitive and rude.. seriously it makes the contestants feel bad when they read the negitive things some people have said. and it is really childish...try giving comments about something they did right than wrong... and yea "i will survive" was motown... they would have called alyssa if it wasnt..SO JUST DROP IT!... and alyssa did a great job!

Funk Bro wrote on Aug 17, 2008 10:06 PM:

Alisha Malloy sang "Second Hand Rose" ? (Not sure exactly)

Funk Bro wrote on Aug 17, 2008 10:04 PM:

Mmmm. Of Course, she's BLACK! That must be Motown. ( Note Sarcasm )

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 17, 2008 10:49 AM:

Funk Bro,
Motown: Soul based music with roots in jazz and blues that came from Detroit also known as the Motor City. Hence the name...Motor and Town..."MoTown"! You can look it up...you just have to be smart enough to use your computer.
Slimfan,
I don't seem to recall any other contestant topping "Faithfully" that night...in the judges' scoring, the judges' praise or the audience response. The kid clearly dominated...can't you just congratulate her??
Sounds to me like you're just a tad bit biassed. Maybe you and "Funk Bro" need to hook up, buy a box of Q-Tips and share your opinions with each other because nobody else seems to care to hear it anymore.

if it didn't have James Jamerson keepin the bottom end on it, it wasn't no Motown record! (only half kidding)

SlimFan wrote on Aug 14, 2008 2:11 PM:

I thought that the 80's song Alyssa sang was one of her very best so far...the journey song, not the Gloria G....but she still didn't truly rank top scores that night. Seriously, folks, what a farce!
I couldn't stay away, too interesting to watch..

Funk Bro wrote on Aug 14, 2008 1:59 PM:

Well, as far as I know, Motown was the Detroit feel. You can't look up a "definition" of it!
I wonder if any of you really know who was behind Motown, and indeed that a group of musicians were on every record that really could be called Motown.
If you can tell me that without looking it up on your computer, than you can have an opinion....
Otherwise, I do not see how that song was Motown.

Proud Mom wrote on Aug 13, 2008 9:14 PM:

To all of you with kind words for my daughter and the other contestants, Thank You. The kids ALL appreciate being told they are doing well, as do their parents.
To all of those debating "I Will Survive"...Alyssa got her karaoke from a CD called Motown's Greatest. The radio station DOES monitor whether or not the selections fit the genre, the kids turn in music ahead of time for that reason.
To everyone...please come and enjoy the show, offer encouragement,& congratulate the kids on a job well done.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 13, 2008 12:41 PM:

Just Facts,
Are you serious?!? This mentality is unbelievable...You need to go to Wikipedia and search MoTown and Diana Ross. Look up the definition of "MoTown", then look up Diana Ross and the "labels" that she was signed to. Do your research before you present your case!
Another thing...quit grasping at straws! If it wasn't in the MoTown genre, I think the judges/officials would have pointed that out.

Oh Please wrote on Aug 13, 2008 12:15 PM:

Just facts.....
Sorry, but "I Will Survive" is a song first performed by Gloria Gaynor, released in October 1978. And it was actually discotheque.
You check that out at Wikipedia just in case you want to throw other facts out there. As for the Teen Idol...parents need to grow up and realize that not everyone wins, that's why it's competition...to compete. If it was for everyone to win it would be called a performance.
Let the kids have their fun and stop griping about your kid not winning. Teach them how to be successful losers so that they grow up to be successful winners.
And I know Kim Handsaker personally, and she has more music knowledge in her little finger than most of you have in your heart. And she is honest as the day is long.

just facts wrote on Aug 12, 2008 3:19 PM:

Diana Ross may have sung ' I Will Survive' but she did it in 1995. I don't think that was Motown

Music Fan wrote on Aug 12, 2008 3:12 PM:

Wow! I'm amazed at how a teen event, organized to provide a positive experience for young people, can bring out such bitterness in adults. I have tried to attend as many performances as possible, and while I haven't always agree 100% with the judges results there has been no doubt that the winner each week gave a fantastic performance. (I wonder if the 3 judges even always agree with each other 100%.) I for one want to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who has given freely their time and energies to make this event happen: organizers, judges, teens and parents alike!

thebeachbum wrote on Aug 12, 2008 2:09 PM:

Great Job Alyssa!! Congratulations!!!

CB Lifer wrote on Aug 12, 2008 10:09 AM:

So sad that so called adults have to make such a big deal about this. If your favorite didn't win, oh well, that's the way the judges saw it. Get over yourselves. Quit ruining things for the kids. Way too much adult/parental garbage goes on.You want our children to grow up, then we too as adults must grow up. We all cannot be winners, and that is a fact of life. Not letting children learn these lessons is one reason they have so many problems "these days".

Another concerned fan wrote on Aug 12, 2008 1:18 AM:

Questions---your remarks sound very much like those I heard from another contestant's family on Thursday night, without the vulgarity, thank goodness.
I also noticed that your group had far more than 1 ballot per person, ensuring that "the audience" would choose your contestant.
I wish I had taken the time to speak up to organizers at the event about it.
If Alyssa has heard 10% of what you said, we all know why she was crying. I saw that someone else's father seemed very angry with you.
KNOCK IT OFF!
By the way, last I checked, Diana Ross was definitely Motown.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 11, 2008 11:52 PM:

Audience,
Well, we'll just have to "agree to disagree". I have been following the competition the past few years and I have to say the judges are NOT perfect, but from what I have seen this year they are very fair...TO ALL THE CONTESTANTS. I don't believe they are handing Ms. Birrer any victories and I feel they are quite "on" in their judging. The weeks she has taken first place she clearly deserved them. I also stand by my earlier comment of "Faithfully" being the best song in recent years. Hopefully we are going to see more performances like that one. I know I will be eagerly awaiting...
Great job to all the girls and Alyssa...don't pay any attention to the negativity. Just focus on the positive, do what you do and keep taking our breath away!

Audience wrote on Aug 11, 2008 1:31 PM:

I'm just a member of the audience, have no kids participating, but it does seem that no matter how well some of the other singers do Alysa always gets first place. I have always enjoyed teen idol but something seems off in the judging this year. Just how I see it.

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 11, 2008 10:39 AM:

Censored,
If your other comments are like the one you just posted I can see why they're not up on the website.
Are they "gushing"...or are they just being honest?!?

Concerned Citizen wrote on Aug 11, 2008 10:32 AM:

Questions,
What?? I think you need to start listening a little better. There's a reason why we have two ears and one mouth...
It's stated by the host, and has been every week, that Kim H. has a history of musical theatre. That's why she's judging. She has "experience".
If you have any questions about song genre...I suggest you call the radio station?!
"Alyssa's good but not THAT GOOD"?!? You can't really be serious?! After the performance that kid gave on Thursday?! She took this competition to a new level. It sounds to me like you're either an upset "stage mamma", an unhappy contestant/family member of one of the other contestants or you just need to clean some of the wax out of your ears?!? If you lost, lose graciously. Don't make excuses and don't throw out digs and insults about a 15 year old girl! This contest is about "singing and vocal talent", not insults. Flush the rest of that stuff down the toilet where it belongs!

Kim wrote on Aug 10, 2008 11:07 PM:

Yeah, Let's just start calling it the Alyssa Birrer Show!!!!

T.I. fan wrote on Aug 10, 2008 1:26 PM:

I can certainly relate to the goose bump-thing! Alyssa has a God-given talent and she should keep using it to her fullest. I say fantastic job to all the teen idols, whether they're still in the chase or not. It takes courage, skill, and sportsmanship to be a good T.I., and I'd say this year's group meets those qualities very well. Keep up the good work!

Burlyman wrote on Aug 9, 2008 10:36 AM:

There's a title given to performances like the one I seen Thursday night. I think we should start using it when we talk about Ms. Birrer..."THE SHOW STOPPER!" The Alyssa Birrer era has begun!
Enjoy it kid...after all the stuff you put up with, you deserve it. Great job!!!

Questions wrote on Aug 9, 2008 10:26 AM:

The judge Kim Handsaker has a musical history with which contestants?
Is "I Will Survive" really a motown song?
Wasn't Alyssa missing from one of the group songs after she couldn't hit the final note in her song? (but she got first place anyway) Hmmmmm, I wonder if any other contestant could get away with all that... don't get me wrong. Alyssa is good but not THAT good. I've heard better up there and obviously so has the audience since they voted for someone else!!!!!

censored wrote on Aug 9, 2008 9:15 AM:

Gee, I wonder why no other comments have made it past you guys. Are you too busy gushing over Alyssa?

pril wrote on Aug 9, 2008 7:36 AM:

woohoo Star!

Proud Mom wrote on Aug 8, 2008 3:05 PM:

Alyssa, I am SO proud of you. You were absolutely amazing.
