This is no way to campaign for office

Americans are entitled to serious debate about serious issues in campaigns as important as this one. However, McCain and his supporters have adopted Karl Rovian unethical tactics and are using smears, misinterpretations and outright lies, and are proposing gimmicky or simplistic solutions to problems in hopes of gaining an advantage over Obama. A small sampling:

— We recently received an e-mail containing shameful nonsense implying that Obama is a tool of Islam. I’m told that the Internet is full of such lies and worse.

— Casual comments by Obama about how he looks different from the usual politician immediately led to accusations that he was using the “race card” to make points with blacks.

— McCain has been pushing ideas that are questionable at best, for example, a reduction in gas taxes or more offshore oil drilling.

— McCain has charged that Obama would rather lose a war than an election.

As an American, I am deeply disappointed and dismayed by such campaigning. As a Democrat, I am angered. If I were a Republican, I hope I would be ashamed. A candidate who campaigns in this way displays an inability to understand this complex world and a lack of moral strength.  Why on earth would you vote for such a candidate?

Why is this letter being pushed out? It is not showing up in the archives as the dates jump from Aug. 8th to Aug. 6th with no Aug. 7th available. Also, this story has 9 comments, soon to be 10. The most commented section jumps from 10 comments down to 8. So who is messing up on the math here? Or does the world only like posting unfounded anti-Obama messages based on internet gossip?

I agree that throwing around false information is no way to campaign for office. The best way to check the accuracy of information that is being said on both sides of the political spectrum is to go to http://www.factcheck.org/ this site has been a useful tool for checking the chain emails that get sent around as facts.

750,000 US citizens have been forclosed on and all you can do is bicker. That is typical for the US. We are on the verge of a depression (ask anyone in your family who lived through the last one they'll tell you it's coming) On top of the economical crisis W and company has pushed down our throats, we also get the great hope that 25 years down the road all those kids who saw their mommies and daddies die in war will be coming over.. and it won't be to have tea.

Now about offshore drilling:

According to a government study published by Mr. Bushes Energy Information Administration, production of usable oil could not start until 2017. Even then, the study concludes, the expected impact in oil prices will be insignificant.

the study can be found here: http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html

The problem with a gas tax is simple economics.

The gas companies know you will pay the current price at the pump, simply because you are paying it right now. There is no incentive for the oil companies to lower the price by the amount of the tax. In fact, they have more incentive to raise the price by the amount of the tax, because doing anything else would represent lost revenues.

To the consumer, the price remains unchanged, but the gas companies come away with even more green.

Uh Ah Um wrote on Aug 8, 2008 7:26 AM:

To quote Senator Obama:
"America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children."

It seems strange that as he is saying America is no longer what it used to be, his wife, Michelle is declared that she's proud of her country for the first time in her adult life.

One spouse says we used to be great and have fallen; one spouse says we haven't been great until now? Which is it?
Good America, Bad America which ever way the wind blows..

I like how you claim its John McCains minions. Using your logic I guess the Barack minions on the Daily Kos are respectable truth tellers. Come on George he can't control what others say just like Barack.

Promises Broken wrote on Aug 7, 2008 4:17 PM:

Barack Obama has officially broken his promise to enter into the federal elections public financing system, a pledge he made to voters and to John McCain.

Naturally, like any good Democrat, Obama blames his lies on Republicans!

This is a guy who stayed in a racist church and stuck by a bigoted reverend for 20 years, grotesquely leaked his Western Wall prayer to the press, and blew off a visit to see wounded troops while the whole world was watching him overseas.

“Nobody thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face. So what they are going to try to do is make you scared of me,” Obama warned, “You know he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all of those other presidents on the dollar bills.”

McCain More of the Same wrote on Aug 7, 2008 2:37 PM:

If after the last eight years of the Bush administration, a deficit of almost $500 billion dollars and a president who says he is above the law of the land...McCain is elected? We get what we deserve...more corruption, death and financial ruin.

McCain is just more of the same..no change whatsoever.
