Lakeside could have a busy race for it’s City Council election this November. That is if all the people who asked for paperwork actually file for candidacy for four open seats.

City Recorder Charlie Hill said only current City Councilor Mack Eubanks has filed for re-election, but she is expecting a bunch of other potential candidates.

Eubanks will be joined by Elaine Armstrong, Chrysta Smith and Gary Wilson, who has not turned in completed paperwork yet but is expected to, in the race for the three, four-year seats on the council. Wilson also is an incumbent city councilor.

Eubanks said his goal when he took office two years ago was to provide open and honest government. That’s still his goal.

He said Lakeside needed to heal after its recall election two years ago, and projects he has worked on since, such as the Lakeside Harmony Community Garden, have helped people feel they are part of a community again.

“I would like to continue on,” Eubanks said. “Keep the community pulled together.”

Current Councilor Buford Gould has picked up paperwork for the two-year seat on the council and Rod Schilling has filed.

Hill said the three candidates with the most votes in the race for the four-year terms will win seats. The top candidate for the two-year term will take the oath in January.

Lakeside voters also will select a mayor. Early this week, incumbent Mayor Orville Nelson was the only candidate for Mayor.

Reedsport’s list of candidates isn’t quite as robust as Lakeside’s so far.

City Recorder Deanna Schafer said of the three positions up for election on the council, only one incumbent, Councilor Bill Otis, has filed for re-election. Councilor Bill Walker hasn’t decided whether to run and no one has filed for a vacant seat. Mayor Keith Tymchuk has filed for re-election.

Reedsport has an early filing date — Aug. 21 — compared to other cities. People interested in serving must have one year of residency and a nomination petition with 25 signatures to qualify. City Council Positions 1, 2, and 3 carry four-year terms. Information packets are available at Reedsport City Hall, 451 Winchester Ave.
