One files for Powers City Council

Powers has long been a town for political debate. But when it comes to the November City Council election, there are few people readying for a race.

A relative newcomer to town is the lone person, so far, to file for office, though there’s still time for more candidates. The filing deadline is Aug. 26.

City Recorder Charlotte Pancheau said Joseph George is the only official candidate, though councilor Mearl McDaniel Jr. has taken out papers.

Councilor Bob Leckband has said it is very unlikely he will seek another term. He was one of four public officials targeted by a recall effort earlier this year.

He kept his seat after voters gave him their support, but he said he probably wouldn’t seek re-election.

The recall didn’t motivate, nor deter, George from taking a stab at running for council this fall.

A 52-year-old retired union carpenter, George moved to Powers about two years ago and said he simply wants to help the community he now calls home.

Phillip Wolcott and Mayor Edward Hamelett also are up for re-election, having both been appointed to their seats mid-term.
