The city of Coquille is fishing for candidates for City Council, but so far only incumbents are taking the bait.

The Coquille seats filled by councilors Kathy Hagen, Fran Capehart and E.N. Daniels are up for re-election. Only those three have filed for candidacy for the four-year positions.

Daniels said one of his goals is to see the Georgia-Pacific mill site developed.

“We’ve been working on that for a number of years,” he said. “I would like to see that completed before I leave.”

Mayor Steve Britton’s filing for re-election for another term as mayor rounded out candidacy filings as of Monday, Coquille Finance Director Chuck Dufner said.

Up the road in Myrtle Point, voters will be electing a new mayor in November. As of Monday, City Councilors Mike Lyon and Mike Johnson had started, but not completed their paperwork for the office of mayor. Current Mayor Ed Cook has decided not to seek re-election, Myrtle Point City Recorder Vicki Strader said.

Councilors Denise DeWald, Maureen Bergman and Barbara Carter all have  picked up filing paperwork, while a new challenger, Doug Veysey, has filed paperwork to join the race.

Veysey’s goal, if elected to a first term, would be to encourage community involvement and find ways to get people active in the city.

“If we can get more people involved in the community then everybody wins,” Veysey said.
