Friday

Foreign love

The Friday Foreign Film series at Coos Bay Public Library will continue at 7 p.m. Friday.  This month features a screening of the award-winning South Korean romantic drama “Christmas in August” (1998).

In this film, Jung-won is a terminally ill photo-shop owner determined to quietly live out his remaining days tending his store and spending time with his family and friends, most of whom know nothing of his condition.

Quirky meter-maid Da-rim begins frequenting Jung-won’s shop to develop photographs of parking violators and the pair strike up a cautious friendship that blossoms into an unspoken romance marked by emotional reserve.

The two grow closer and closer, nurturing their love for one another- but Jung-won’s health fails him, and he is carried off to the hospital, leaving Da-Rim waiting outside the closed door of the photo studio without a clue what is going on.

A work of unusual subtlety and sophistication, “Christmas in August” is an introspective film that relies more on the actor’s performances than lines of dialogue to express meaning, a press release described.

The Friday Foreign Film series is held on the second Friday of the month and is free to the public.

Many of these films are not rated, and parental discretion is advised. For more information, call 269-1101.
