Gun accident
Wednesday, August 6, 2008 11:09 AM PDT

A 48-year-old man made a visit to Coquille Valley Hospital on Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the upper thigh while driving.

At about 5 p.m., Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies and Powers Police officer went to the site where the man had been shot on the Powers/Agness Highway, about four miles south of Powers. There, they found Tony E. Anderson of Shady Cove suffering from a gunshot wound on his right leg. A sheriff’s office press release said Anderson was trying to handle his Smith & Wesson .44 caliber revolver, moving the gun from a door compartment in his 2008 Toyota Pickup to the seat beside him while he drove home from work. The gun went off.

Although alone in the truck when the accident occurred, Anderson’s coworkers, who followed behind, provided medical assistance.

An ambulance took Anderson to the hospital, where he was treated for his injury. This morning, a hospital spokeswoman said he remains at the hospital in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
