Fire closes Central Oregon highway

Wednesday, August 06, 2008 |
REDMOND (AP) — Two teenagers are suspected of causing a brush fire northeast of Redmond that closed the O’Neil Highway for two hours, prompted the evacuation of four homes and burned one vehicle.
Redmond Fire Marshal Traci Cooper says the teens were playing with legal fireworks when the grass caught fire and the flames spread across the highway late Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters gained the upper hand on the blaze, but expected to be working on mop-up until midnight.
There’s no word yet on if the teens will be charged.
The fire broke out ahead of a “Red Flag Warning” for explosive fire weather issued by the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say thunderstorms will move into the region late today, with more storms expected Thursday and Friday.
