SILVERTON (AP) — A Silverton police officer cleared in the fatal shooting of an Irish citizen, but later charged with sex crimes in an unrelated case has resigned rather than be put on unpaid leave.

The Silverton police department said Tuesday that 35-year-old Tony Gonzalez was to be put on unpaid leave Aug. 1 but quit that day, Friday, instead.

On June 30, he fatally shot a 20-year-old Irish national, Andrew Hanlon, who was said by his family to have mental problems.

The officer said Hanlon threatened him and he had no choice. A grand jury declined to indict him. He’s being held without bail in the Linn County Jail in Albany.

But in an unrelated case, he was arrested on sex abuse charges involving an underage girl.
