No one was injured when a car caught fire on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 101 in North Bend on Monday.

According to an Oregon State Police press release, at about 5 p.m., Rodney Rice, 61, of North Bend, had parked a 1975 Ford Pinto Runabout on the southbound lane shoulder of the highway and was attempting to install a fuel pressure regulator when a fire started. The fire burned the engine compartment and hood areas, the press release said.

Several passing motorists stopped and helped put out the fire using fire extinguishers and water from bottles, prior to the arrival of North Bay Fire District firefighters. Rice and a passenger were not injured.

I wonder how "not suprised" can "guarantee" the majority of people who drive old rusted cars have ratty looking homes? One should not make promises that cannot be kept.

I was always told as a young person to buy the most expensive home you can afford and the cheapest car you can get by with. Homes appreciate and cars do not. Hmmm . . . not so hard to figure that one out.

If you really think the problem around here is appearance you are totally clueless. The problem around here is poverty, lack of jobs and snobs.

not surprised you must be one of them transplanted oregonians from california. As a guy that has lived in coos bay 90% of my 51 years I have seen what was once a booming town where a man could get a job just around the corner when and if the one they were working at ended. To where the home and lawns and cars were taking care of Because they could afford to do it then but now it's a differnt story with not a whole lot of jobs in this
community that pay enough to put food on the table let alone worry about what someone may think about my car or how tall my grass is

If the County would let jobs come into the area, then there would less of those cars on the roads and less shanty houses in the area. Most people do not have a lot of choices on where they live or the condition of them. Just look at some of the photos of the Farms around this country that went through the Great Depression. Not good!!!

Clarence- I can nearly guarantee that the majority of people around here driving these "old rusted cars" have homes that look as ratty. The problem around here is people not caring what their homes, cars, or they look like. It doesnt take much $$ to wash a car...mow a yard...take a shower...not wear pj's to the store. Self esteem is FREE.

In response to not surprised. From a retired Ford mechanic. The fuel problem was with the gas tank in the event of a rear end accident and not under the hood. As far as these rust buckets as you call them this may be their mode of getting around I have been seeing more of these older cars coming back out due to the price of gas. As far as coos county being a backwards county I feel that more than likly it's the backwards people of coos county that have nothing better to do than complain about what others cant afford to drive

i cant believe someone actually still has, oh, excuse me, HAD one...

Not Surprised wrote on Aug 5, 2008 11:37 AM:

Pintos were taken out of commission YEARS ago because of fuel fires- only a backwards county like Coos would even allow one on the roads, I've also seen rusted old Yugos here, watch out for that one too-you might need a tetnus shot if you get near that one. Get with the times Coos County and get these death traps off the roads.
