BAKER CITY (AP) — Mosquitoes trapped near Baker City and tested for the West Nile virus were carrying the disease.

Health officials say the mosquitoes were trapped last week in Keating Valley northeast of Baker City.

The insects carry the disease, which infects birds, horses and people. Cases have already been reported in Oregon. But the mosquitoes were among the first insects that have been trapped to test positive for West Nile.

Last year, Oregon recorded 27 human cases of West Nile virus, most of them in northeastern Oregon.
