The UCAN Head Start is accepting applications for children ages 3-5 for the 2008-09 school year. Children from low-income families and those with disabilities are welcome.

North Bend students earn degrees at Grinnell

Students from Coos Bay and North Bend graduated on May 19 from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. The Class of 2008 included 380 graduates.

Zair P. Burris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and mathematics. Burris is the child of Merry N. Lojkovic of Coos Bay and Thomas V. Burris of North Bend.

Maggie N. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and music. Johnson is the daughter of Alan J. Johnson and Aurora M. Johnson of North Bend.

Grinnell College is a nationally recognized, private, four-year, liberal arts college. Founded in 1846, Grinnell enrolls 1,600 students from all 50 states and from as many international countries in more than 25 major fields, interdisciplinary concentrations and pre-professional programs.  

Coos Bay student earns bachelor’s degree

Gonzaga University celebrated its 115th undergraduate commencement ceremonies on May 11. Lance Lorenz, of Coos Bay, received a Bachelor of Arts in history.

The keynote speaker was the Rev. Gary Smith, former street priest serving the homeless and disadvantaged of Portland, who most recently worked with Sudanese refugees at the Jesuit Refugee Service in northern Uganda. Also honored at the ceremony was Harry F. Magnuson, president of HF Magnuson.
