The three teams from Area 4’s South Division all won their games on the opening day of the American Legion Class A State Tournament at Clyde Allen Field on Friday.

The Grants Pass Miners shut out Pendleton 2-0, while Ashland beat Roseburg Pepsi 11-6 and North Medford topped Jake’s Crawfish 14-4 in six innings.

They joined host North Coos in the winner’s bracket entering the second day of the tournament today.

Pendleton and Jake’s Crawfish meet at 9 a.m. in an elimination game, followed by Roseburg Pepsi and the Willoughby Sonics in another elimination game at noon.

Grants Pass and North Medford meet at 3 p.m. and Ashland faces North Coos at 6 p.m.

Grants Pass 2, Pendleton 0

Taylor Bars pitched a one-hitter to lead Grants Pass to its win over Pendleton in the tournament’s opening game.

Pendleton’s only hit was by the team’s first batter, Jeff Eickstaedt, who led off the bottom of the first with a single. Eickstaedt was thrown out trying to steal second by Grants Pass catcher Micah Schmidt.

Bars did walk three batters and hit two, but his defense held up behind him, keeping Pendleton from getting any rallies.

“Everyone played well,” said Bars, who had seven strikeouts in the win. “My curveball was working well and I was making the right pitches in the right situations. My D was backing me up all the way.”

Grants Pass scored both its runs in the fifth inning, each as a result of errors by Pendleton.

Carl Armanino had a one-out single and stole second. He then scored on an error after a ball hit by Logan Werner. Later in the inning, Werner also scored on an error.

The Miners won despite getting just three hits against Pendleton pitchers Isaac Henslee and Kevin Nooy. Bars and Mike Suthann had the other hits.

Grants Pass coach Travis Osborne said the win was a relief.

“We don’t have to play at 9 anymore and we don’t go home first,” he said.

He was pleased with Bars’ effort on the mound.

“Taylor threw well,” he said.

Ashland 11,  Roseburg Pepsi 6

Defending state champion Ashland overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring six runs in the fourth inning — the big blow a three-run triple by Nick Hall.

“That triple really changed the game,” said Ashland coach Royce Miller. “That was a big hit for us. The score went from 4-3 to 7-3 and we finally had some breathing room.”

The Pilots loaded the bases when Max Gordon had a single, Brent Hegdahl walked and Josh McLaughlin reached on an error. Luke Stone attempted a suicide squeeze, but Gordon was out at the plate. After walks to Jake Scarminach and Hayden Miller, Hall hit his three-run triple. Ian Kendall followed with an RBI double to give Ashland an 8-3 lead.

Ashland followed the big fourth inning with three more runs in the fifth.

“Our first two guys went down and then Stone came up and ripped a double over the center fielder’s head,” Royce Miller said. “We ended up scoring three runs in that inning.

“Our stats for scoring with two outs and nobody on are amazing this year.”

Hall finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Kendall as 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Stone had a double and two runs and Scarminach also had two runs.

Miller was happy that Ashland was able to pull starting pitcher Garrett Tygerson after the fourth inning, saving his arm for what the team hopes will be big games later in the weekend.

Vine Ampi went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and a sacrifice fly for Roseburg. Tyler Bullock added two hits and a run.

North Medford 14, Jake’s Crawfish 4

North Medford broke open a close game by scoring nine runs in the sixth inning to finish the win by the 10-run rule.

Jake’s Crawfish, one of two Portland teams in the tournament, scored twice in the top of the sixth to pull within 5-4 before North Medford’s big spurt in the bottom of the inning.

Mark Cokenour was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After Shawn Whitehead put down a sacrifice bunt to move Cokenour to second, Jessie Hornbrook and Cory Pine hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Hayden Wolfe reached on an error and  Bradey Shipley and Chris Bradshaw had RBI singles. Stephen Cole walked, Corey Haggans had an RBI single, Cokenour was hit by a pitch again and Whitehead walked to load the bases. Hornbrook then smashed a triple to end the game. Only the first two runs counted because Cokenour’s run stretched the lead to 10 runs.

North Medford coach Brett Wolfe said a two-out, two-run single by Stephen Cole in the fifth inning was the key to the win.

“That relaxed us at the plate,” Wolfe said, adding that having the lead entering the bottom of the sixth gave his hitters a different mind set, which led to the big inning.

“We started off a little slow,” Wolfe said. “Their pitcher (Micah Holmes) had the ball down in the zone and we struggled a little early. We made some adjustments and were able to put some hits together in the fifth and the sixth.”

Hornbrook finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and triple and two runs scored. Shipley also had three hits and two runs, while Bradshaw and Pine each had two hits.

Hayden Wolfe had three runs and two stolen bases for the Mavericks and also pitched a complete-game five-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Brett Wolfe said Hayden Wolfe’s fastball was off a bit on Friday, but he was able to overcome it with an effective curveball.

“Hayden was able to throw his breaking pitch behind in the count,” the coach said. “He threw enough strikes to give us a chance to win.”

The Mavericks were state champions in 2006 and also reached the tournament last year.

Micah Holmes had a single and triple, scored twice and drove in two runs for Jake’s Crawfish, which draws its players from Wilson High School and is in the tournament for the first time. Peter Valentine had two hits and scored the other two runs.

Is Royce Miller, Ashland's coach, also the Royce Miller who coached Ashland HS basketball in 2006-07? And, why did Coach Miller only coach Ashland HS basketball for 1 year?
