Area stars to play in Shrine Game

Five South Coast graduates will be on the field this weekend in the annual East-West Shrine Game, a fundraiser for the Shriners Hospitals.
The all-star game for players in Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday in Baker City and will be televised live by Fox Sports Net.
North Bend’s Kale Forrester, Siuslaw’s Drew Rainwater, Coquille’s Justin Lessley and the Gold Beach duo of David Bonotto and Mitch McDonald have been preparing this week for the game.
The players for the East and West teams were chosen by the coaches following the season last year.
Forrester and Rainwater will suit up for the West team after completing outstanding careers in the Far West League.
Forrester was a standout running back and linebacker and one of the state’s top punters and helped North Bend reach the quarterfinals last fall, where the Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to top-ranked Sisters.
Rainwater was a do-everything linebacker and defensive back for Siuslaw and a key component of the Vikings’ state-champion team in 2006.
The other three South Coast players will suit up for the East squad because the Sunset Conference has been designated as a league for that team.
McDonald and Bonotto both were key defenders on Gold Beach’s state champion team last fall and were widely recognized for their efforts — McDonald as a linebacker and Bonotto as a defensive back.
Lessley was a standout receiver for Coquille, scoring touchdowns in nearly every game with his breakaway speed.
People watching Saturday’s game on TV will find Bonotto wearing No. 4, McDonald wearing No. 6 and Lessley wearing No. 80 for the East team.
On the West side, Rainwater will be wearing No. 10 and Forrester No. 33.
The players met in Wilsonville last week at the Al Kader Shrine Center and have been practicing this week at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
The game is in its 56th year, and has the nickname The Greatest Little Shrine Game in the World.
It is recognized nationally as the No. 1 fundraiser of its kind, and raised more than $71,000 last year through gate receipts and program advertising. An estimated $2.5 million has been raised in the history of the game.
