Community Sports: Fast Breaks for July 26: Wright places in top eight at national meet

Prefontaine Track Club member Lindsey Wright placed in the top eight in both her events at the Junior Olympics National Meet in Omaha, Neb., this week.
Wright was sixth in the high jump in the youth girls division on Friday, clearing 5 feet, 1 inch. The winner in the event jumped 5-3.
On Thursday, Wright placed eighth in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 101⁄2 inches. The winning height was 10-101⁄2.
Wright, who lives in Reedsport, was the only athlete from the Pre Track Club who qualified for the national meet.After placing first in the state meet, she also won both her events in the regional meet in Washington. Other Pre Track Club members qualified for the regional meet, but opted against making the trip to Washington.
Newport Street Vault
Moriah Roberge separated herself from her sisters as Marshfield High School’s record holder in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet, 1 inch, in a street vault competition at Newport last weekend.
Roberge, who will be a senior this fall, had shared the record with sisters Celina and Muriel at 12 feet.
David Eckes, another Pre Track Club member, won the youth boys division at Newport by clearing 8 feet.
All-Comer Meets
Eckes set a new personal best by getting over the bar at 8-6 in an all-comer meet at Eugene on Thursday. He was one of several Pre Track Club members to win events at the meet.
Greg Eckes cleared 15 feet to win the young men’s pole vault, while Sammie Clark won the intermediate girls pole vault, clearing 11-6, and Roberge was second in the young women’s pole vault at 12 feet.
Lane Seals won both the high jump and triple jump in the young men’s division with a pair of personal bests — 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump and 46-6 in the triple jump.
An all-comer meet will be held at Marshfield High School this coming Friday, with field events starting at 4 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m. The entry fee is $3 for community members, while there is no charge for Pre Track Club members.
Coquille Tribe Tournament
The sixth-annual Coquille Indian Tribe Youth Fundraising Adult Golf Tournament last weekend was a big success.
A field of 24 teams was entered in the tournament at Coos Country Club. The proceeds sponsor the Southwestern Oregon Youth Golf Camp, scheduled for July 28-30 at the country club. The camp instructors will be Coos Country Club pro Randy Byers and other pros in the area.
The Atronic team won the scramble tournament with a score of 57, beating Platt in a playoff. Low net honors went to Y-Marina with a 55.
Major sponsors for the tournament included The Mill Casino-Hotel, Coquille Indian Tribe, Bandon Dunes, Bally, Bi-Coastal Media and KCBY. The title sponsor was Bandon Golf Supply. Eagle sponsors included Kanomi, AC Coin, IGT, Atronic, Gary Platt, Global Surveillance, Spielo, Umpqua Bank, Sterling Savings Bank, Nestle, Partney Construction and Crow/Clay. Par sponsors were Coca-Cola, Ron’s Oil, Vend West, BNT, Boyd Coffee, Wild Horse Resort and Casino, Chinook Winds Resort & Casino, Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino, Cedar Electric and Lil Stinker. Y-Marina was the hole-in-one sponsor.
Other sponsors who donated gifts included Wendy’s, Books by the Bay, Wildlife Safari, Don’s Jewelers, Harry Ritchie’s Jewelers and Dave’s Pizza.
Youth Golf Clinic
The Coquille Indian Tribe Youth Golf Clinic included more than 75 South Coast youths.
The Coquille Indian Tribe presented each of the participants with a golf hat, while four youths received a golf bag and set of club, and three youths received scholarships to the Bandon Dunes Summer Golf Academy.
The Coquille Indian Tribe extended thanks to the staff from Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and the Coquille Indian Tribe Youth Golf Committee for a successful clinic. |
