Jason, if people don't complain about things, nothing ever gets changed. If there are no complaints, people who run things will think everything is ok, when it is not. You will learn that soon enough I guess. You might see things aren't right, but might not necessisarly have the answer either, but does that mean you have no right to say it isn't right? When people do have good ideas around here, nobody wants to hear them (I mean people that run things, like councilors, commisioners, city managers, mayors, etc.) Well, live and learn, I guess !

Opal, I kept all receipts, but when
you put presents under the tree at Pony Village, there is nobody there to give you a receipt, so I just wrote on the receipts where the items went. And the toys for tots don't give receipts I asked at several places where I left presents if they could give me a receipt, (one place was The World) and the employees would tell me they could not give me a receipt. I thought that keeping my own documentation on where I gave presents and keeping the sales receipts was good enough. It was not good enough for the auditor. I thought I was doing everything that I should.
I still stand by my comment earlier, that I think people should send written Thank You Notes to people, which is becoming a lost curtesy, and that is sad. People need to teach their children to write thanks yous, not just one letter or email to a newspaper. I am reading that I guess all you people do appreciate seeing your names in the paper and I guess thats fine if thats what you like.

Young or old...all anyone in Coos County does is whine about something, anything, everything. Try this, keep your negative thoughts to yourself unless it is imperitve to the growth or safety of our city.

I think the Kudos and Cheers and Jeers are both fine additions to the paper. No one has to read them. I think though that if you get donations from a business it is nice to give them a bit of "free" advertising but, I agree that each person or business listed should also receive a personal note. To Reader: did you save all your receipts for tax purposes? Surely, if you did the tax people would have given you some credit. Did you ask the organizations for a receipt? If they can't give receipts due to the confidential nature of the receipients.

hmmmm, maybe, just maybe, the world could make a section of the newspaper just for the local and surrounding schools, then if you choose to read it you can, if you dont want to, keep your nose in the other sections of the newspaper, then you wont have to keep reading the same kudos over and over, because people like me, like to give them, and i also like to receive them, they make a person feel better about themselves, especially when your talking about children and school age children, it makes them feel like they are appreciated and makes them work harder at what they do because they know they are appreciated....

The whole story is I did keep every receipt every year, and everything else I was supposed to do, but if the auditor wants to think your lying (which I was not) he wins, you cannot win against the revenue dept. no matter how honest you are, and I am. I enjoyed giving presents to the needy for years, and could do it as long as I could take it off my taxes. I cannot afford it now. I feel now like "no good deed goes unpunished" I did not expect thanks only that I could do it and take it off my taxes. But the auditor thought I was giving the things to family and myself, which I was not, don't have that big of family and don't need myself. So don't say I'm not telling the whole story, thats it... The thanks I needed was just knowing myself I was doing something for people who needed it.

If you werent smart enough to tally and keep the receipts of your "generosity", then you deserved an audit. I personally dont think your telling the whole story.

Reader,
What makes you think that I'm not another elderly person who has just been expressing my opinion. Shame on you for being so critical of an elderly person's critical opinion of another elderly person's critical opinion.
I, too, am giving praise where it is deserved; in this particular case, the "Kudos" letters in the World.

Way to go Peggy, finally someone had the same idea I had about the KUDOS in the paper. Who reads it, except the people thats name is listed.
Same goes for the editors opinions in the CHEERS AND JEERS piece. Who cares what he thinks of old news? Not me...
In Case you even care wrote on Aug 4, 2008 4:11 PM:
Peggy does not have a computer so cannot read your "negative comments about her" also she does write a lot of letters and not all are negative, just so happens thats the one or ones that get printed. I think it is good that someone as old as she is, is still even reading the paper and giving opinions. She could just sit back and not give a darn whats going on, like most people her age. I appreciate that she cares.

How Sad that some do not wish to read the good that happens in the world. We are overwhelmed with bad news today, give us some good news to lift our spirits. I can see no harm in this practice as plenty of space is given to the negative news, let us have a little balance.
What is a hometown paper, if not for the people. Print more good news, I for one can use all we have to give.

To "Too Bad" you should be ashamed of yourself for being so critical of an elderly persons opinion. She has as much right to her opinion as you or anyone else does. She certainly has earned it, have you?????
Peggy also gives praise where it is earned and she has some darn good ideas and opinions, I THINK ....
Reader wrote on Aug 4, 2008 9:49 AM:
I agree with Peggy, get rid of the KUDOS, and the CHEERS AND JEERS, BOTH A WASTE OF SPACE . The letters are the only thing interesting in the paper. And "thank yous" should be sent to people in the mail on "Thank You Cards" the old way.
Plus good deeds should be done without a lot of fanfare. I have done lots of good deeds in this area and got no thanks and expected none.
What did happen was, I spent thousands of dollars on Christmas presents for Toys for Tots and the Girl Scout tree at Pony village, and I got audited by the Oregon Tax dept.saying they didn't believe I bought all that stuff for underprivileged people, that I bought it for myself, and they made me pay a lot of money back to the Oregon Dept. of Revenue so now I can't afford to buy all the presents if I can't take it off my taxes. THATS THE THANKS I GOT.....

How about keeping the thank-yous and getting rid of a column written in 2001? I'm insulted to be expected to read such old "news" in a source that purports to be current every day.

Before you ask the World to charge others for expressing their opinions you should take your own advice and take out an ad.
If you don't like something that is printed, you can easily divert your eyes and seek out an another article you might enjoy reading.
There are many things going on in the world today worth getting upset over but this is not one of them. Seems kind of petty, Peggy.
too bad wrote on Aug 1, 2008 2:25 PM:
What should anyone care if the World wants to give "free advertising" spreading the good word about people, businesses, and organizations that help others and do good deeds? Good for them!
Maybe the World should instead charge people to have their letters printed, especially those containing thoughtless criticism of others. It's just "free advertising" of negativity.
spread the thanks around wrote on Aug 1, 2008 2:18 PM:
I, for one, appreciate the fact that the World gives a forum for "Kudos" (AKA Thank Yous). To suggest that non-profit organizations and community groups be forced to buy an ad to thank those who have generously supplied asssistance is uncaring. Kudos to the World for offering this service to the public.

I've always enjoyed listening to Peggy's comments on the radio and in letters to the World, but this time she's gone too far!
It's one thing to condemn a School District for something, but to discredit an employee is WRONG!
I guess you've never been cited for ANYTHING, huh Miss Peggy?
Anyone who believes that Mr. Mulkey did anything other than tag the wrong deer in a group hunt better go back and look at the record!!!!
