Jeff McKeown is in for Round 2.

McKeown announced Thursday that he will seek a second term as mayor of Coos Bay. Now in his 12th year on the council, the last two as mayor, McKeown said he is happy with the progress the city has made, but he wants to see some projects through.

“It seems like so much has been accomplished in this time, yet it seems like there is so much to do,” he said at a ceremony Thursday night at Benetti’s restaurant in downtown.

McKeown has not formally filed for re-election and the only candidate to file with the city so far is Gene Melton, who wants to keep his seat on the council.

Mr.Pickering, Consider my hat thrown into the ring for a seat on the Coos Bay city council.

I don't know who Elliot Trepper is. No I am not part of the team you speak of. I have not made up my mind on Jordon Cove as of yet. I need to do more research. As of now I am leaning in opposition to the LNG project for reasons I feel are sound.

Steve Pickering. Aren't you part of the Jordan Cove team? Don't you work with Elliot Trepper. So we may support your candidacy, where do you stand on Coos County LNG? I'm for it.

Consider my hat thrown into the ring for the council. I will file as soon as I get back from Denver on Monday.

Remember the name, "D. Stephen Pickering".

I was born and raised in Coos Bay for 27+ yrs, I wanted to raise my children in that town! As for the economy, sucks! Any new, fresh idea is brought down by the city who is all in the "good'ol boys club". It is sad to see out of towners buy homes and make a new place there when "we" can't even afford to live there. The schools only worry about $$ getting in their pockets vs. the education and our kids' futures. The worst thing I could see is another mayor that doesn't change or add better to the economy but fatten their pockets from the poor. The town is dead! I cannot believe how nothing has changed, but it has gotten worse! How could this go on for so long or as long as the logging seized what some 15 yrs ago! If it is going to be a retirement town it must also have young people to support and without the housing (affordable and clean), and good paying jobs, well nothing will change. For City Council....GOOD LUCK to you when judgement day comes, you will all then be judged for what you really are!

YES!!!! Dr. Muenchrath for Mayor...sounds good.

Uncle Who wrote on Aug 4, 2008 10:27 AM:

Dr. Muenchrath (the balding, intelligent one on channel 14) It is time the good citizens of Coos Bay deserve a mayor that will put their concerns first, not the self-serving special interest groups.
He will get my vote if he should run for the office, or will write him in if he doesn't.

Jayna wrote on Aug 3, 2008 8:35 PM:

Anyone notice McKeown's little reception party was held at Benetti's? Good ole boys club to boot!

Coos Bay Resident wrote on Aug 3, 2008 5:03 PM:

JEFF, It's time to call it quits! What have you done for the city of Coos Bay? "NOTHING" Did you ever give Fred Myer the $2 million out of your "OWN" pocket? Let's get some new faces to run OUR city government. I would put my name in to run for mayor, but only familiar names get the votes. I wouldn't make promises I can't,but only to do the very best that I can. I would even "LISTEN" to the citizens of Coos Bay.

Common Sense wrote on Aug 3, 2008 7:13 AM:

Well Jeff,

Unless you start thinking about the area first instead of yourself (Supporting the California LNG SCAM due to your property ownership next to it) & start running area better (NOT fee'n to death every potential incoming business), your chances of winning are less then winning the National Lotto! Sorry, but the goodoleboy system is slowly going bye bye...

GeorgeW wrote on Aug 2, 2008 11:42 AM:

PES, Meunchrath is on the Coos Bay City Council and he is the balding intelligent one if you watch channl 14.

CB Man wrote on Aug 2, 2008 4:26 AM:

Stick a fork in Jeff, he's done! The only way we can get real change in our town is if someone like Dr. Muenchrath would run for mayor. The man has class and the knowledge to improve this town greatly. I'm writing in Dr. Muenchrath for mayor also!

pes wrote on Aug 1, 2008 10:03 PM:

Dr. Meunchrath would get my vote if I still lived in Coos Bay!!! Give it up Jeff...seems like you have made another fine mess of things...and Coos Bay must still be the same depressing area it has always been...no change in thirty years..how sad...

Resident wrote on Aug 1, 2008 7:20 PM:

What is the "progress" he is happy with?

josepht wrote on Aug 1, 2008 5:19 PM:

"so much to do." Jeff if you would stop talking and start listening maybe the people would support you. This was not front page news. But telling us about your four North Spit properties near the LNG terminal that you want may be news. Somehow they didnt get listed on the yearly state ethics report. I've been watching mayors come and go for almost 60 years. Your bio at the city web site says that you do everything except part ocean waters. Your fellow democrat Obama does that. I'll be voting for a new face. The city charter says that the mayor must conduct two meetings every month and sign anything put in front of him by the council. Even old, poor, and uneducated me could do that. The council president is the head of Coos Bay government. Let's treat him that way.

Mr E wrote on Aug 1, 2008 1:27 PM:

What "progress" has the city made during his tenure (in both the city council and mayor's office)? What is the greatest accomplishment that has been done? Putting in antique-style lights in a couple parts of Coos Bay, in a silly attempt to draw tourists?

Bah, humbug. Zero steps forward, three steps back... that's the mantra of this man, Joe Benetti, and their ilk. They'd be happy if the lower-class citizens in this are just died off or left, so they can have a town of 1,000 retirees or rich folk.

"Dr. Meunchrath gets my write in vote for mayor"

Me too!

kelliann wrote on Aug 1, 2008 12:32 PM:

Jeff your time is over. It's long past time for mayors and council presidents not named Benetti or McKeown. You have lost perspective living with the snooty rich people atop telegraph hill. What have you done except give our tax money away? Now you want more. You've been on the SCDC board since the beginning. Other than telling the LNG developer that we are ready to help him, and you were not speaking for me, what have you done? Where's the jobs you promised? 12 years is too long. Dr. Meunchrath gets my write in vote for mayor.

howardjarvis wrote on Aug 1, 2008 12:03 PM:

Sorry Jeff but it's time for a few new faces who unlike you will listen to the people.
