Three milestones contributed to a rise in Coos County nonfarm payroll employment by 170 jobs in June — the opening of the new addition at The Mill Casino-Hotel, the new Southwest Oregon Regional Airport terminal and the dismantling of the shipwrecked New Carissa.

“Those events provided a boost to the Coos County tourism sector, as well as the support industries involved in those projects,” a WorkSource Oregon press release said.

Despite these gains, the unemployment rate is still higher than it was a year ago. Over the past 12 months, payroll employment has fallen by 160 jobs.

Coos County’s unemployment rate rose slightly from 6.4 to 6.6 percent from May to June, due to an increase in the total unemployed labor force, which includes agriculture, domestics, unpaid family workers and the self-employed.

In June, both professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality services added 60 jobs to local payrolls. Indian tribal local government and construction added 20 jobs.

This was offset by a decline in educational and health services, with an estimated decline of 40 jobs. Most other sectors showed little change in employment.

In June 2007, the unemployment rate was 6.2 percent. Over the past year, the largest decline occurred in professional and business services, down by 210 jobs. Other sectors shedding jobs include natural resources and mining, retail trade, as well as construction, each dropping by 30. Food manufacturing stood at 40 jobs below the total in June 2007.

Indian tribal local government slipped by 60 jobs over the year. Educational and health services, as well as leisure and hospitality, were up over the year, each gaining 70.

Curry County

Curry County payroll employment gained 100 jobs in June, as seasonal increases in leisure and hospitality employment accounted for the majority of the rise. Construction employment rose slightly, gaining 20 jobs over the month. Education and health services dipped by 20 jobs in June. Most other sectors showed only slight employment changes. Curry County’s unemployment rate was estimated at 6.3 percent in June, unchanged from June 2007.

Over the year, Curry County has been hampered by a slower housing market, and a general economic slowdown that has restrained growth in key industries such as leisure and hospitality, manufacturing and retail trade. Construction showed the weakest trend over that time, down by 100 jobs, a 16 percent drop. Job losses were smaller, but widespread in other industries including accommodations and food services, trade, transportation and utilities, and logging.

State and National

The state’s unemployment rate in June was calculated at 5.5 percent, up from 5.2 in May and 5.1 in June 2007. The national unemployment rate for June was 5.7 percent, rising from 5.2 percent in May and 4.7 percent in June 2007.
