Coos County needs a plan to end homelessness and you can help.
A committee is moving forward again after getting funding to hire a consultant. Strategic planning begins at 5 p.m. Thursday with a committee meeting to discuss how to help homeless families. It will be held at Eden Hall 1 on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus in Coos Bay.
Bob More, director of Housing and Emergency Services for Oregon Coast Community Action, said the meeting will serve as an opportunity for focused brainstorming. Participants will be asked to discuss what they believe causes the problem, what needs and resources are available and what resources are needed.
Meetings to discuss youth and chronic homelessness will be held at a later date.
“Local homeless service providers are doing the best they can with the resources available to them, but we are still seeing homelessness in the area increasing,” More said. “There are parts of the puzzle that only can be solved by forming community partnerships and by communitywide coordinated efforts.”
The process began last spring, with some initial discussions, though work was delayed because there wasn’t enough money available to hire a consultant to facilitate events. That changed earlier this year, when Bay Area Hospital, Communities Empowering Youth and Community Action donated funds. Those were used to hire Crystal Shoji of Coos Bay to will serve as facilitator at Thursday’s meeting.
A Plan Steering Committee will review the work of three groups looking into the problem, discuss recommendations and draft the goals and actions of the plan. The Steering Committee is expected to meet three times between July and November. More said the goal is to have the plan completed by the end of December.
