North Bend student Kevin Waller set two new state records for the 14-year-old age group at the U.S. Western Section LC Championship in Gresham last week.

Waller, who swims for the South Coast Aquatic Team, posted a time of 4 minutes, 11.18 seconds, to finish 20th in the 400-meter freestyle and set a new state record.

His other record came in a time trial for the 200 freestyle, which he completed in 1:59.42.

“That was pretty exciting,” said SCAT coach Chris Richmond.

Waller also finished fourth in the 1,500 freestyle, in 16:26.05.

Waller was one of four SCAT swimmers to compete in the meet. The others were Denise Green, Matthew Johnson and James Verger.

This weekend, Waller, Verger, Sean Esperance, Kelcey Morgan, Gabe Deen and Rachel Heaney are competing in the 11-and-older state meet in Eugene.

Three other SCAT swimmers recently competed in the 10-and-under state championships — Alyssa Bennett, Alyssa Monohon and Nathan Monohon.

A large number of swimmers from both SCAT and the Gold Coast Swim Team competed in the Roseburg Rotary Open last weekend.

Results for all of those meets can be found in today’s Community Scoreboard.
